If you were to make something in the style of Ryoji Ikeda, what apps would you use?

In the style of the classic Data Matrix? I'm thinking basically an impulse, a sine and effects, maybe something glitchy?

I got reasonably close using single cycle waves in koala and messing around in Drambo... But How would YOU go about it??

  • Oh man now I'm playing with Skiid and Silo. Perhaps we have too many apps to make this kind of music :D

Interesting. This track is quite enjoyable when played back on high volume.

Surely check out GlitchScaper for the glitchy parts? You can define some impulses there.

I found this video to be good:

You also get some guidelines for making visuals, looks like VS would be a good candidate.

OH! this would be good in plugdata! Thanks!

Absolutely beautiful. Reminds me a bit of Monolake.

Yeah his stuff is monumental! I first experienced him at the venice Bienalle in 2019, in a dark room on a huge screen, with a massive soundsystem, it was transcendental!

I’ve also seen Ryoji perform back in the 90s in a theatre venue at Manchester Uni, the bass was indeed monumental! Support was Dead Voices On Air iirc.

  • Daaaamn
    Really loving this

I would use nanoloop for sure. My first choice. Out of the box you already have noise, sine and sample capability :sunglasses:
    Maybe even sunvox and/or drambo

  • Example (not mine)

Skiiid is a great one too
I just thought of another oldie that can be fun: Bleep!Box
And also, GR-16 has plenty of basic waves, conditions and whatnots that may be fun

while browsing the "else" library that comes with plugdata, i came across an object named "ikeda". ikeda map chaotic generator.
perhaps you might have a look at this?

  • Oh what!? That sounds cool

  • One of the best ever. Seems like you and Frap Tools are on the same page. Not sure if you’ve seen this and it maybe inspired the post but if not, you could follow along with this in any modular environment (Drambo, MiRack, Audulus etc)

  • Such bar code style patterns can be created easily using these two modules in Drambo:

Turn the RND knob to the right to get a higher pulse density and to the left to decrease it.
The LFO frequency determines the rate at which the "bar code lines" appear.

Although have to say that after listening to the tracks, there's more repetition than randomness in there 😊

Recording the random to flexis and sequencing them repeatedly seems like a good option
