I mostly just stream. About 3 years ago I treated myself to an iPhone 12 and reasonably big data contract. Along with a reasonable pair of bluetooth headphones I've found it very convenient.
About 8 years back I lost my physical music collection when an asbestos roof collapsed on it. The ones I regret losing the most were irreplaceable.. local bands and friends demos, mostly CDs but some cassettes. Some from the 90s that even the bands now longer had.
In recent years I've bought a few Vinyl albums... some that mates bands have had pressed and some limited edition signed stuff but... I doubt they'll ever get played by me. No record player... very much an impulse purchase keepsake.
I have a bluetooth soundbar and subwoofer in my workshop if I want music "loud". I haven't played a cassette for a long time. I've had CDs in vehicles in the past 5 years. Most the time I drive with headphones in, listen to music from phone and if someone phones me... music stops when I answer the call. It's much better really... I remember CDs skipping, getting jammed in and cassettes getting chewed up. It was nice reading the album sleeve when you bought a new one, but in these internet days, there's a lot more to be read about artists you like online. times change!
I own a lot of vinyl. It’s pretty much the only medium that I use to listen to music when I’m home. I’ve digitized and gotten rid of most of the CD’s that I once owned. The only CD’s I kept are either (kinda) rare or they’re used for references when mixing.
Errr … wouldn’t a big weighty tome be more fun?
ive been watching too much Buffy of late perhaps lol
how awful losing the rare tapes and such. i lost a tape of my family and myself singing and other such things when I was a kid. today, it would probably be on the internet saved somewhere. Same with most band demos would be on the web somewhere today, while back in the day, many great demos lost to time.....
Yup. CD’s, vinyl, video games, dvds/blu-ray. I do use those but only when other options aren’t available, or feasible.
are HDDs physical enough?
~10,000 CDs & 7500 vinyls.
Avid collector all my life & an FM Radio DJ for 40 years.
Another 2000 vinyl albums are stored in another room.
I have probably around 300-400 DVDs. A bunch of CDs, some tapes, and some vinyl. We live in a tiny home now so it’s all in storage until we upgrade and I’ve had to stop buying physical media outside of rarities and good finds. But I still love having the actual physical pieces. Something special about it
I ripped all my CDs many years ago, though I currently still have them. I have all my cassette tapes too, though it has been ages since I actually listened to one. I’ve got Wendy Carlos CDs on the way that’ll get ripped and stored once they arrive.
I do have a small collection of vinyl. (I was also vain enough to get the EP I released last year cut on vinyl.) And while I do have a turntable, there’s some work to do to create a space to set it up. We’ll see if I actually end up using it for more than just ripping the vinyl that I can’t find digital copies of and listening to my EP at least once.
The DVDs have sat unused for quite a long time, and they’ll probably get pruned soon. The important ones have been ripped.
I’ve got a number of books that are kept for sentimental reasons, and very occasionally one gets pulled off the shelf. There are occasions when I decide to buy a new book, but I always make sure I get a digital copy too. Even if that means I have to buy two physical copies and get one scanned.
I do have paper and writing instruments, but they are almost exclusively only for the joy of making marks on paper. Anything practical is digital.
And, of course, there are various hard drives and SSDs, both local and remote, that store all my data.
“Some Girls Wander by Mistake” - nice. That early Sisters of Mercy was the best.
Yes, I used to have all the 12" singles years back. We regularly danced to Alice and Temple of Love at Rock City in Nottingham
Nice collection. Looking at all them rows makes me feel warm inside.
Yes, something magical me thinks.
I did the same at the Banshee in Manchester 🕸
The funny thing is I remember the cold nights kipping in the bus station afterwards more than the nights out! I definitely don't remember the pints I got for selling my Vinyl back then!
Anyone else into the Criterion Co? I have about 20-25 of them. I used to have almost 100 but had to sell some when I downsized. Love their work though. Arrow is doing some cool things as well.
Never heard of them, will take a listen at some point.
Are you able share any links?
Sure!

Thought it was a band lol
Haha nope! Just a cool company that restores and makes collectors DVDs and blue rays. Pretty cool stuff though.
Do u know btw that they also have an ipad app and subscription service, like Netflix?
They do but I never have subscribed to it.
Yep! I haven’t subscribed yet, but have been meaning to for a while now. Have you tried it? I know some of my other film buff friends like they and Mubi a lot. I’ve tried Mubi and it’s good.
I do have a couple of Criterion Film noir. I stopped buying movies a while back. Music I still buy but I have slowed down a while lot.
I used to buy about 100 CD a year. Now it's about 5 because room is becoming a challenge.
Yeah my wife and I live in a tiny home so now I only buy digital copies on Bandcamp to support artists when I can and only buy a movie if I find a rare or cool one at a good price.
I own a 2 bedroom condo apartment. It probably is huge compared to your tiny home. If it is as small as the ones I seen on YouTube
No, haven't tried. I did subscribe to Mubi but actually unsubscribed because I just wasn't really using it enough. I also really dislike certain aspects of the Mubi app / website experience. Often you think they have something but don't. I found I spent too much time deciding what to watch there or chasing things up that turned out not to be available. Loved Mubi when I first discovered it but now? No, not so much. Subscriptions in general rarely feel like they give value for me, as I am not consistent enough in my use of things from month to month or year to year.
Lol I thought the reference was to a band as well. All I could find was the Criterion film company when I searched 🤣
