ReZonant Expert -- UPDATED with extended version.

Inspired by the prolific output of people such as @jwmmakerofmusic and having listened to the new drone-type-thing solo album by the king of synth pop Vince Clarke I thought I'd combine the two and try and make a tune in one day with similar limitations/rules as VC used on his tracks.

My self imposed limits were to use one chord, drone style, no drums, under 4 minutes long and completed from a completely blank slate in one day.

Synths used:

Lagrange, Lorentz and Kronecker from Icegear
RePro 1 from U-He
And a single note drone from Spitfire Audio Originals Cinematic Pads

fx includes wires from audiothing for the filthy delays. One of my favourite plug-ins for delay. Frotsbite from Audiothing is in there somewhere too.

Polyverse Comet is a fantastic reverb for this kind of thing as it lets you smoothly automate the parameters and also it has a morph feature to glide from one patch to another. It's lovely and lush.

The main melodic synth at the beginning was an edited patch from one of Spidericemidas presets for Lagrange. I only bought Lagrange that day and it was one of the "A"s. I edited it a bit, changed up some stuff and altered the arpeggio but without that patch the song wouldn't have gotten off to a quick start so thanks for that. Your presets are awesome, thank you @Spidericemidas :-)

Made in Logic on the Mac with a ton of fx automation to try and keep things reasonably un-boring. The automation took up most of the actual time making it. There isn't much going on in terms of track count.

I didn't have high hopes of being able to do that, but I think it actually came out OK (I'll probably listen back in a week or so and wonder what the hell I was thinking and delete the lot!).

Hope the fact it was made in 4 hours doesn't go against it LoL. I'm a bit out of my comfort zone with this kind of music. Not even sure what genre it is.

Please feel free to critique. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Tips for things that could do with fixing are also helpful. Finishing it in a day obviously meant attention to detail suffered, as it usually takes me much weeks to go from nearly finished to finished!

Negative comments will be met with a barrage of swearing (joke -- have at it!).

Update 13/02/2024

  • Like it. Only complaint is it is too short. The time for me to start to get sucked in, and it was over.

  • If this is you going out of your comfort zone: you should do it more often. Cool track!

Thanks. I will think about how to make an extended version.

    Cheers :-)

I found it hard not to add more chords and to think of choruses, verses, bridges etc.!

Have an idea for another… paraphonic mode on my hardware B. Pro-1 is waiting for this treatment :-)

Thank you! I think?! What’s wrong with my comfort zone?! hahaha :-)

  • Supremely atmospheric and cinematic. Moody and dark with a lot of tension. Agree with @jo92346 . There's no reason why this couldn't be a longer track. It wouldn't get boring. You got just the right amount of movement and variation in it already to keep the interest going. What you got going on towards the end seemed to be building up to a huge downbeat of some kind, launching into a massive heavy halftime dubstep type beat or something, at least in my imagination.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked its dark and dystopian feel. Super impressed it was made in only 4 hours! I have no doubt our talented and prolific friend @jwmmakerofmusic would be thrilled to know he was an inspiration! 👍👍

Thanks. No reason I can't make a long version with big drums! I had 'no drums' as one of my 'rules' to make it but I finished that stage so anything goes now :-)

I think I'll leave it for a bit and come back to it with fresh ears and see where it takes me.

Yeah I mean the beauty is you can keep the current version intact and make duplicates for trying all manner of other things with it. Hope you do more like this one. It worked out really good!

Thanks. And it really did come together after playing one of your ARP presets in Lagrange, that was the catalyst (sorry for changing it a little bit LoL).

So thanks for the cool sounds (I think Icegear might deserve some credit too!).

  • This is absolutely incredible. :) Well done mate. I love how you cobbled all of this together in less than 4 hours and made the mixdown sound so good!

And prolific? Mate, come on, lol. 😂 I just do what I do and love what I do is all.

You’re an order of magnitude more prolific than I am so yes! I’ve made enough tunes in the last 4 years for an album. But I want to remake two of them so the album is a work in flux.

and once I’ve remade those two I’ll probably want to remake another 2 and I’ll never be done.

Wow thank you! I never expected anybody to actually like it!

    I appreciate everybody’s kind words. :-)

  • Great work. I love that dirty drone sound. Like other have said I was waiting for the big drums to drop in. ,👍

I might just have to do that… and maybe a filthy 303…

  • Thanks everybody for your suggestions.

After a few listens and attempts to add drums and take it in another direction, I think I’ll leave it as it is. I quite like the fact it leaves you expecting more. Every time I added something I liked it less.

I’ll probably try and use the ideas I had for adding to this track as a basis for a new one instead.

  • I really like it, there's so much going on and it's always interesting. It just goes to show what can be achieved with dynamics and textures, even over a very simple harmonic backing. It's beautifully dramatic and I love the way it evolves over time.

It doesn't need drums, I would leave it just as it is.

Thanks Richard. I’ve come to the same conclusion. As you may have noticed over the years on your song club, I tend to question myself quite a bit when I’m finishing a track. Then at some point something clicks and I know it’s finished. And then I’ll draw a line under it.

This one is indeed done. I’m half with it as it is. It was fun to do too. And all done and dusted in one day.

  • The build up to the 3 minute mark was excellent. I felt a bit deflated when it wound down so I would have happily listened to a longer version. Top job 🙏

I’m elated that my track made you so deflated :-) (jk)

    Thank you :)

I guess ‘leave them wanting more’ is a good thing? ;-)

    OK! Here’s another:

Similar constraints but with one added twist. This one was made 100% on iPad. Even though I’ve been using the iPad to make music since about 2013 this is the first track I’ve made from start to finish without it touching my Mac.

It was also an excuse to use Logic properly rather than just messing about. Turns out Logic for iPad is actually rather good!

I’m almost catching you up! Two in a week or so!

I don’t think I did as good a job on the mix this time though. I could do with extra time to mix.

  • Lol "shameless self promotion". But wow! This extended version is truly magnificent! Well done.

  • Really great stuff! It's got arp'y stuff, which always makes my ears happy. Exceptional groove. I've been listening to a lot of Trent and Atticus, this rolls right into that style. I like both the first and extended versions for different reasons, each highlights different things. And an excellent mix! The drum kit really pops and yeah, the automation to keep it interesting is always key and the detail that sets things apart. Really fantastic work!

  • Well, there you go, very nice!👍🏻
