Gear used playing live
Hi Guys,
Just checking what gear you use while playing live?
It’s more the midi controller side of things (with faders) I was wondering about.
Thanks.

Nobody? So let me say something.
My main axe is Numa X Piano, but my main sound source is 2 x Pianoteq8 plus KQ Dixie and Galileo 2 for colours.
Actual upper keyboard is LaunchKey 61 mk3 and this is for Mood, TAL, Pure Synth and Galileo. Sliders and pads I use for volumes and switching on/off, pots for synths and LaunchPad Mini PC changes. Everything in AUM.
Hope it helps. Cheers.
Last time I had a live jam it was just a Korg Nanokontrol connected to Drambo with Dagger as a "polysynth" plus a Sub37, a Microfreak, a Digitone, a Digitakt, an Electribe MX and a few effect pedals 😄
I was mostly playing with presets that I made some time ago.
The Nanokontrol acted as a transport controller, mixer with buttons as track selectors and scene selectors.
I didn't feel the need for mute buttons because I could just as well flick a fader.
Roland MC707, aside from its built in sounds, mixing, and control you can use it as a midi controller as well.
Playing live from my bedroom lol. Novation Circuit Tracks sequencing from all 8 tracks to drambo, to the s1, and usually my Typhon too. And two synths whatever is the flavor of the month. And kick, snare, hats and claps. Then the korg nano controls 3 Euclidean sequencers on top of the claps, snare and hats for some spice, and particles sequencing Fractal bits. Usually there's another korg nano for Pure Acid. Novation launch control for faders, mutes and filters. Have two actually, and often add the smaller launch control for ffx A and B.

I use two faderfox controllers. Definitely pricey but they're compact, high quality and support a variety of types of midi messages (including relative midi for the encoders which is very handy)
Nanocontrol 2 for all my faders and transport, a midi fighter twister for a million things but mostly fx and preset switching, an mvave chocolate for quick looping, and a Linnstrument in split mode to play 2 synths at once. Everything hosted in loopy pro so the iPad is a performance screen too.
Thinking about a nanopad to start finger drumming a bit.
Me too, UC4 is my mainstay and i have an EC4 for more complex jams.
I’ve used a bunch of gear over the years, used to lug a Machinedrum and Virus classic (plus mixer, outboard fx, cables etc) around to play live, today i feel less is more…ipad and one or two small controllers is more than enough to get the job done
I’m very simple at the moment, doing solo gigs. I use a Yamaha P125 keyboard with my iPad and iPod touch to playing backing tracks, blutoothed to my pa speakers, and a vocal mic, and a flugelhorn.
Yea I rock a UC4 and an EC4 as well! Its a great combo.
The only thing I miss is having physical sequencer/clip-launcher controls with a tight integration. And that looks like its coming down the pipe for what I use
Thanks for your answers.
I went with an Akai APC40 Mk2 and a org midi keyboard.
Both working great so far.
Very exciting, Drambo is also my preferred workstation!
My last jam was yesterday which had everything running.
I've now got a really cool work flow for sampling and all the synths are in place.
Five mono synths ranging from semi-modular to an analog modelled synth in dRambo
with a combination of analog and digital filters for sculpting.

Korg Volca Beats
Roland JV-1010 for that classic sound without the bulk
with dRambo as the brains.
there are also Third Party auv3's in usage.
That's great! For now I'm using my circuit for that, and was even planning on getting another one, but if this would work could use a launchpad for that!
I play live music for a living, no faders present.
I'm a solo acoustic/piano act, always looking to expand what I'm doing in practical and minimal ways.
My gear changes depending on the gig, I'm happy just turning up with guitar and mic into PA.. job done. lol.
Recently I've added a foot stomp (Logjam Prolog) and it adds a lot of beef to the sound, idk why I didn't get something like it sooner. Might add a foot tambourine as well for one-man-band-no-loops stuff, because I can also hold a shaker while playing + play harmonica so I can go from pure acoustic + vocals to a pretty decent full band sound without any backing tracks, loops or additional people.
But, with loops etc..
Focusrite Scarlett Solo for guitar and mic, iPad w/Loopy Pro + Songbook Pro (and the Quicksmart Evolve app), good to go.
I've been messing with adding drums via drum machine apps in Loopy Pro (Hammerhead), but I find electronic drums right now to be done best if I play them myself via KORG Gadgets drums (I like Gladstone a lot) and an Akai MPK Mini Play - the mini has some dials on it, that I've got mapped to loop volumes, so if I do do this, I've got access to a little extra mixer-like functionality too. Also some synths/keys but I'm not crazy on synth bass.
I'm yet to find any way of adding bass that I like. Synth bass doesn't sound great imo, my favourite method is just plugging in my actual bass. But that adds extra gear, I don't want to be doing that for gigs, as I want gigging as minimalistic as possible. I don't like any of the octaver/pitch effects on iPad that I've tried (for pitch shifting acoustic/elec guitar).
I do have some elec guitar stuff in the project as well - TH-U Overloud is my preference, but I'm not gigging this yet - mostly because I just want to work on getting good at looping and the one-man-band-no-loops thing.
It's frustrating because there's so many more things I want to try - I want to try a baritone guitar, I want to introduce elec guitar stuff to my gigs, but don't want to carry around an elec guitar + acoustic guitar.. I want to add more keys, but don't like hauling extra gear.. I do have a Yamaha CK88 that I've gigged a few times, and a NI S88 Mk2 - they're both awesome, but I just hate hauling so much around.
I need a bigger interface/mixer, as the Scarlett Solo holds me back - it's a large part of why I'm not trying to gig elec bass + elec guitar and everything. So carrying things around isn't the only issue. This tiny audio interface needs to go ASAP as I can't even have my foot stomp plugged in + the acoustic guitar haha. I really like the Logjam Prolog and would love to just loop the kicks.
I can get some nice snare sounds from the Prolog too, by hitting it at a different angle or with different parts of my shoe - can loop a nice kick+snare beat. But, then I can't loop acoustic guitar. Oof.
That's mostly it for the more relevant stuff - I absolutely have plans to go more all-in on looping with various instruments, once I've got a big enough audio interface to do it. I don't want to spend like $500 on one though, so keeping my eye out for a used USB one. Needs to be USB so I can use it with iPad/Loopy Pro.
I can't wait for Loopy Pro to hit Mac. That will be another game-changing moment for me, as I have a plethora of software ready to go, and I trust the Mac more than the iPad in a live environment. Really looking forward to that. I'll actually swap over to Loopy Pro entirely as my DAW + looper then.
I used to be DAWless using a Roland SP404-MKII, electric guitar, effects pedalboard (Boomerang III looper, reverbs, delays, pitch-shifter, wah pedal, fuzz, etc), Mackie 802VLZ4 mixer, and Shure Beta58A mic.
But now I'm transitioning to the world of iOS with AUM, Loopy Pro and all the other lovely AUv3 apps. I just love the flexibility and precision with iOS apps. (I'm slightly less thrilled with the iPad cable interface compared to my DAWless setup). I love the incredible power of Loopy Pro to do everything I could imagine.
Along with an electric guitar and a Boss IR-200 guitar interface, I'm using a Korg 88 weighted key midi keyboard at home and for travelling an Akai LP25 keyboard right now. And I am thinking of getting either a Korg NanoKontrol2 or an Akai Midimix. I play with a percussionist who loves dub/reggae and having one of those controllers will be a nice addition to Loopy Pro for bringing trippy effects in and out of my loops.
You ever use midi guitar 2? Worth considering. Also the Madrid gadget has some good Bass tones, and pairs very well with Gladstone imo… might work for you? > @greatestlengths said:
well, if we're talking about iPad-based rig – Circuit Tracks all the way.
because it works as a MIDI controller, and it has sidechain.
basically i could play a live set just with iPad, Circuit Tracks, and Launchpad Mini as dedicated clip/scene launcher.
using Zoom U-22 as audio interface – not the smallest one out there, but inexpensive and runs on two AA batteries.
all this stuff fits literally any backpack and happily runs off a power bank for hours, so this is my on-the-go rig.
but if we talk about bigger setups (with Drambo/StreamByter/TouchOSC as a «brain») – then i'm using various combinations of:
coming to Zoom LiveTrack L-8 (live) or L-12 (at home) mixer, so the number of the boxes used at once depends on the number of available mixer inputs.
in bigger setups i don't do any audio with iPad, only MIDI, because i want to keep my latency as low, solid and predictable as possible.
Typically:
SH-101
SPD-SX
Stratocaster
Roland A-49
iPad
iPad
M-audio track duo
ART DI
Arturia Microfreak
Zoom ms70cdr
Arturia minilab 3
I’m starting to integrate a modal argon8x in that setup, and eventually a novation control xl, mainly to connect with AUM, but still testing the configuration that will suit me.
