Macros app for AUM

I’m wondering if there is any app that can be an insert plug-in that can be macros to control other plug-ins parameters? I’m seeing like 8 knobs that can be assigned to control other plugins filter or parameters. I love the way in AUM the last used parameter shows a dial on mixer page, but having a few more would be helpful. One can always use a hardware controller I know too.
Thanks

    • Surface Builder lets you add knobs, etc. and configure them to send midi messages to control AUv3 parameters.
    • Loopy Pro lets you do the same. You don't have to use it for loops at all.
    • LK by Imaginando (Controller Module / IAP) has configurable sliders, knobs and buttons in a fixed arrangement.

There are others, some are plugins, others such as TouchOSC and MidiDesigner Pro2 have to run standalone, though they can run in popover mode over AUM.

I have Loopy. I always wanted to know how to do that. Is there a tutorial somewhere on that? Loopy has great-looking dials. Thx!

    Hi,

Which part are you unsure how to do?

In Loopy Pro loaded as an AU, create a new project and add whatever widgets (sliders, knobs, buttons, dials) you want to use.

Add a Send Midi Action to each widget. Choose a unique MIDI message for each widget. Set MIDI out as the target.

In AUM’s midi matrix, route the Loopy Pro AU’s output to MIDI Control.

In AUM’s midi control settings, assign the midi messages you created.

Here are screenshots of the widget setup and a configured send midi action.

I'm sure there are tutorials galore, but I don't watch many YouTube videos so I don't know which to point you to that focus on controls. It's pretty straightforward. In general, for making a control surface for use in AUM.

    1. Add Loopy Pro AUv3 into AUM. You can add it as a MIDI FX node, an Instrument input, or as an audio FX. IMO the most useful place to put it is as an Audio FX. But since we're focusing on MIDI control here, add it as a MIDI PROCESSOR AU node in an AUM MIDI channel.
    2. Open Loopy Pro and touch the "pencil" icon to get to the editing screen.
    3. Tap and hold in an empty area outside the clips, then drag the selection box to select all the clips. Select Delete from the popup. Repeat as needed to remove all the clips.
    4. Tap a knob or fader icon to add to the screen. Resize or move if you like, but it won't matter much at this point. To resize or move, repeat the long-press and drag motion to select the widget and get the resize handles.
    5. If the widget is selected, un-select it. Now tap on it to bring up the settings for the widget.
    6. At the top of the list tap Value Change. This is the action that happens when you change the value of the widget.
    7. Find the MIDI Actions > Send MIDI Message using search or by scrolling.
      • Set Target to MIDI Out
      • Set Message type to CC
      • Set Channel to 16 and CC to 20. These can be whatever you like, this is just an example.
    8. Tap "Back". You should see something like "Send CC 20 to MIDI Out" under Value Change.
      • Note: you can add as many such actions as you like to create "Macro" controls that change multiple things.
    9. Name and set the color for the control if you like, then tap outside the menu to close it.
    10. Tap the pencil icon to close the editing screen. Your beautiful control will now be displayed in all its glory.
    11. Open AUM's routing matrix and route Loopy Pro AU to MIDI Control.
    12. Find something that you want to control in AUM's midi control system. For example:
      • Add an Audio channel, tap the channel name at the bottom, then the "Faders" icon at the top-left of the popup.
      • Tap Channel Controls then Volume
      • Change the Channel and CC Number to match the Loopy Control
      • Move the Loopy control you created. It should move the AUM fader.

The powerful thing about this from your OP about "macros" is you can add as many send midi actions as you like to each control. You can create as may controls of whatever type you like, and arrange them as you like.

I hope that helps you get started exploring.

One word of warning about AUM MIDI control. There's no controller feedback and no "pickup" mode. So, lets say you directly moved the fader from the tutorial above. The Loopy Pro widget won't be updated to reflect that change. So, when you move the widget, the fader will jump to the widget's current value before starting to move.

There's currently nothing that can be done about that for any hardware or software controller until AUM adds support for pickup mode. That's a deal breaker for some, so I thought I had better mention it.

Loopy Pro is an excellent AUv3 app host and it does have pickup mode, should you decide to use it as a host rather than AUM. That's a really big workflow change that not everyone is up for though.

There does seem to be the possibility that pickup mode will get added to AUM at some point.

  • Thanks so much Wim! Yeah, Loopy Pro is really good. I'm using it more often. It's really powerful..I just am learning so many apps all the time. Drambo too:) I appreciate your detailed help@!
