Born Under A Darker Star - updated with tips on using Beat Breaker and FAC Medusa with guitars 🎸
The song was built around a guitar riff that came to me in December, which I then expanded on to build the whole track around. Tracked and mixed in Logic for iPad.
Lyrics in the spoiler, as ever thanks to all who listen and comment.
Stay shy of the light
Wake up at the break of night
Where you go, what you see
The shadow knows where you will be
A tongue like barbed wire
You sweet talking liar
You can’t change who you are
You’re born under a darker star
You wandered you wandered
you wandered so far
You fall far down
And when you look up there is no one around
Ghosts that you will know
Will take you where the lilies grow
Black veil on the head
As the gospel verse is read
Your eyes are on fire
As you cut the wire
You can’t change who you are
You’re born under a darker star
You wandered you wandered
you wandered so far
You fall far down
And when you look up there is no one around
Take the fire, hold the flame
It is yours for you to tame
The devil knows what you can do
But the path is up to you
And so your desire
Leads you to the fire
You can’t change who you are
You’re born under a darker star
You wandered you wandered
you wandered so far
You fall far down
And when you look up there is no one around

I like this one a lot. I read the lyrics as it played. They go perfectly with the music. The whole package is very well done. I see from the play count that many others agree with me. Great track, bro!
Love the energy in this track, and the vocals / melodies are so nice. Drums and Guitar are rocking. This got multiple listens from me.
Just keep em coming!
It's a really good song, nice sound too.
Thanks! The play count is just Soundcloud farming the track out into people's autoplay feed, it's a feature called first fans, to be honest I'm pretty sceptical of it.
Thanks, multiple listens is the biggest compliment you could give, I'm very grateful. 😊
Thanks both! They will keep coming, I'm on a cadence of around two songs every month at the moment, let's see how long I can keep it up. The music comes relatively easily, but the vocals, melody, and lyrics are what take the time to put together.
I created video for the track using Wizbel:
I thought this was really good! The music and lyrics were perfect for each other. And it has a strong hook.
Nice groove with vocals that fit perfectly. Great song.
Love the guitar riff. Drums are great too and it drives along nicely. The guitar sounds and fx are really good too. Great stuff :-)
@Stochastically @aufde and @klownshed thanks so much for taking the time to listen and to comment. ♥
Whenever I have a few minutes to spare I like to sit down with the guitar and noodle away. Almost every single time I do this I will find some new riff or chord progression that could potentially form the basis of a song.
I think almost anyone who regularly improvises music this way is fascinated by the unconscious process that leads to these moments where some new idea is born. They just seem to appear out of nowhere.
I've made a habit of always recording a video whenever I come up with a new idea, and then I go through all the videos later and pick the best ones to develop further.
I was just going through my more recent videos and I came across this one: the riff that forms the basis of this song.
Before the post disappears into the abyss, I thought I might share some of the production tricks that went into creating it.
Something I like to do is to blend modern production techniques, especially the stuff that works well on iOS, with guitars. Juxtaposing things that don't normally go together. I often use ambient textures in the quieter sections of my songs, using apps like NoInputMixer or Glitchscaper.
In this track I used Beat Breaker in Logic to mangle the main guitar riff after the second chorus, along with Baby Audio Transit to create an EDM-like breakdown. I think this creates a really exciting section and leads into the final chorus nicely:
Another production technique I've recently discovered is to use FAC Medusa to shape guitar tones, it's incredible and can really create some beautiful results when used on distorted guitars. The trick is to split the signal rather than use the sum option, and the upward compression can work really well (this is enabled at the 1 minute mark in the video) check it out:
Wow, you're on fire ! I missed that track ! It is great. Thank you for the tips Richard!
I didn't get Transit yet. I'll wait for some sales though I am sure I already have apps that can get similar results.
I just purchased the latest FAC app which is incredible on drums and remembered how good all Fred's apps are. Will definitely try Medusa on guitars. I am also afraid to dive into beat breaker, this one seems like a rabbit hole
You could do what Transit does with some patient automation using several effects, but it's really convenient having all that movement mapped to just the one knob. The one-dial automation also means It also means you can loop a section of the song and tweak the effects without having to constantly adjust the automation. It's a pretty nice plugin for just this kind of stuff.
Beat Breaker isn't hard to use BTW, and it's very versatile. You can use it on rhythmic stuff as I did here, but also on pad-like sounds as well (it will obviously make them more rhythmic, but that's why it's interesting).
Here's an example on a track from a few months back, this time I'm using Beat Breaker on vocal choir samples from Xinematix:
That workflow does wonders!
Very nice track. Feels like an Interpol track from an unreleased album.
Thank you for all the good tips! It gave me great ideas for next projects!
