Old tape effect
Dear all,
I've got Gauss in my collection.. I'm not using it to record from a mic (ala field recorder) in this instance..
but just hoping to use it as an old school tape/warbled effect over my basic Bassalicious app sounds.
Running the app full screen, the UI allows you to select input (mic / other)..
when in AUV3 mode, I can't see that option in the UI, no matter how I scale the window . It best be there somewhere, right?
Anyhoo, until then, I hear anything through my headphones, I believe I've got AUM set ok (in terms of inputs and outputs, nearly every item is ticked ✅)
but I just hear nothing 👂🏻
It's probably something obvious im just missing..
Anyone understand what I mean?
(sorry, it's late here).. ⌚
Comments
There's no option to pick an input because there's only one input in an AUv3 FX.
I'm guessing you just don't have MONITOR engaged.
Gauss doesn't apply FX until you record something. It won't work like a live FX processor.
Yep, it's the "Monitor" button. Took me a while to sort this out, too.
Ah okay..
So to be able to hear an effect live as I play... I could do with a different app?
ChowTapeModel is really good and free.
RE-1 is good too. Kind of like Gauss in some ways.
Yes, you'll need an additional tape effect.
In case you own Drambo, Patchstorage has quite a number of free projects:
https://patchstorage.com/platform/drambo/?search_query=tape&tax_platform=drambo&tax_post_tag=&orderby=modified&wpas_id=search_form&wpas_submit=1
Ik mixbox has a cassette module which is great for lo-ti tape sounds and the Boards of Canada style tape skips and wow/flutter.
The “DiY tape” Drambo rack by @childofthecorndog is amazing. https://patchstorage.com/diy-tape/
+1 on ChowTapeModel.
TB ReelBus is super popular, I bought it after reading a ton of recommendations but don’t click with it. IMO it’s too subtle, I can’t get the quick and instantly satisfying crunch I get out of Chow’s.
Audiothing Reels is a nice plugin for vintage tape sound design if you want it really gritty. I use Chow Tape mostly for the thickness slider to smoothen things out and tame harsh sounds.
I don’t think there is a better tape simulator than the free Chow Tape Model (which is free because it was written as part of an academic research project and the dev felt that as such it should be freely available).
A good free one is https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/tape-cassette-2/id1507434173
AudioThing's Wires looks fascinating as a old tape effect (even though it's mimicking a 'wire' recorder rather than a 'ribbon tape' recorder.
Yeah I have basically all the tape plugins and I still haven’t found one I like and use more than ChowTape. It’s just excellent. That, Wires, and Tape Pro are the top 3, imo.
Seems to be many fans of tape here...
How are you guys using it?
Any specific app you mean in general?
I never use lo-fi tape FX as it is. But that’s me, read this usage list as entertainment only.
Doug's new Chow Tape video released today:
Thanks for the mention @tahiche , glad you dig that tape rack ✌️
Heads up for Drambo owners, that rack comes included in Drambo’s factory presets IIRC, no need to hit patchstorage.com 🏄♂️
I have that and love it…but was wondering how the paid version Tape Cassette Pro is in comparison
I've never really used Tape Cassette Pro. I usually use Wires for that really grungy tape effect and ReelBus for more subtle tape effects (although ReelBus is capable of really degrading sound quality as well).
Yeah I’m quite happy with ReelBus (I use it on my mix down) but was curious how tape pro is
I have it, and if I remember I will test it tomorrow.
I’d recommend Caelum Audio’s Tape Pro, but I honestly don’t know if the very serious feedback problems I had with it have been fixed or not since I gave up on it some time ago. Anyone else here using Tape Pro?
In my opinion, there is nothing better than the free ChowTape.
I definitely agree ChowTape is the mutts nutts just for fiddling around in.
Agreed. I got ReelBus because of all the hype and comments but hardly use it, always come back to ChowTape. Instant satisfaction.
I am pretty much obsessed with wobbly tape effects. Started out with tap delay and then bought pretty much every tape effect out there. I can say that for me @childofthecorndog's DIY Lofi tape effect in Drambo is the one I keep coming back to. I'm not interested in perfect representations of a particular machine, or tape... I just like the grunge. Apart from that LOFIAF is very good.
virtually everything on my channel is slathered in the wow and flutter:

I use ReelBus on my final master to add a tad bit of warmth… I forgot I even have chowtape so I’m gonna play around with it
ChowTape sounds great and is the most flexible, but its flexibility means it's not the quickest to dial in. While the interface is reasonably clear, there are so many parameters to consider. The presets were underwhelming for my use case, but with a bit of work you can create your own presets with the exact sounds you're after.
TB ReelBus is much quicker to dial in and sounds great for a bit of warmth and saturation, wow and flutter, and subtle (or not so subtle) tape noise. The controls can feel a bit small, but it's easy enough to use.
I prefer ChowTape for detailed sound design, and TB ReelBus for fast results. Both are great for adding warmth to a mix.
If you don't need precise control over every tape parameter, there are few multipurpose lo-fi effects that will give you a range of analogue and digital degradation options. As well as the aforementioned LO-FI-AF, you could check out Artifacts, which can also be used to generate a range of sounds on its own including hum, hiss, radio noise etc.
I use it quite often and haven’t had any issues so maybe it’s fixed. Great app overall.
