Oh by the way I just released a new single

It’s not everywhere yet, probably will be over the next few days, but at least YouTube has it already

Yes there is a bit of iPad synthery in there but hardly much, I used a few iPad synths as standalone external synths (one — iSEM — audio from headphone out into stereo in of the Zed 10 mixer, the other two iPad apps — NLog Pro and MonoPoly — I’d figured out how to get the iPad to work at 48KHz into lightning audio into the MacBook’s Logic Pro by that time (the trick was to create a composite instrument whatever they call it, with the Zed 10, and let the Zed 10 clock allow 48KHz selection) (it crashes Logic Pro like buggery though, but at least I got as far as I needed) – the other synths used were OpSix Native (both layers of the bassline) and then lots and lots of different Oberheim Matrix 1000 (one day I’ll sell my three and either be satisfied with iSEM in their place, or investigate a Behringer Pro 800 in their place)

  • This is great!. Very original, has a very unique harmonic tension. Like things are about to go out of tune but they don’t, a lot of personality.
If I may do some constructive criticism, totally personal and I only dare because I love the tune… To my taste there’s a bit too much delay going on. I like the extreme delay, I get why it’s there, but IMO it’s too in-your-face-all-the-time. It might be more efficient if it came and went…
    Kudos to you. Great track!

  • I love the quirky English sensibility of this tune, great to hear something so fresh and original. It might have been worth trying in a slightly lower key because it sounds like you are at the very top of your vocal range, but that's also part of the character of the song.

The vocal delivery really reminded me of Syd Barrett on Matilda Mother:

  • It is just about as high as I can’t go (it was in C ironic, whereas I’m more comfortable in A to B-ish)

Yep the delay it itself treated very much as an instrument (I’ll do a LPX screenshot in a while to show you – it has it’s own track with automation and rate switching to get that tape glitching you get when you switch speeds)

  • Oh and the song is about triboluminescence – an energy phenomenon which is still not very poorly misunderstood by science (and perhaps more so by other disciplines)

I thought there weren’t really enough songs about triboluminescence so this is my contribution

That whole page reads like it could be satire, incredible. 😂

here's the vocal processing through the exposed echo track (which is just the basic ‘echo’ not even my usual tape echo, I’ve just realised)

Incidentally after the previous releases of last year on dobly atmos, this song is as close to mono as I can feasibly get (because we now have HomePod mini)

  • That’s interesting – I’ve just realised that the Logic file I’ve just opened is not the latest version, it’s somehow several days back, before I sang revised verses, before I added synth lead line backing, before I added the guitar intro

and it's the only Logic file I have of it, there was only one – in iCloud

    fuck it, it's fucked

Oh well, I can't sort it out now, I’ve got other things that also don’t work to sort out at the moment, I’ll leave it for another weekend and do it all over again, it didn't take long in the first place, then do a rerelease

  • okay it's deleted from distrokid, so it'll disappear from all stores soon

    Reconstructed from what I remember, re-sang, re-guitared, re-synth-leadlined and re-mixmastered – it's either pretty close or better

rereleased. still under the same ISRC code, but slight change to the cover (my name is purple) to let me tell them apart:
