Preventing Audiobus from automatically connecting to all available network MIDI sessions

Hey everyone, I hope this is the right category to ask this question!

I'm currently setting up a project where I'm sending MIDI from my MacBook to my iPad using RTP-MIDI. This works well, but I've noticed that when I start Audiobus on my iPad, it automatically connects to all MIDI sessions it can find on the network.

As I have about 20 different MIDI sessions from multiple devices on my network, this takes a while and freezes the app for some time. It also causes unnecessary traffic as my iPad will receive MIDI from all sessions.

I only need Audiobus to connect to one of these MIDI sessions. Is this currently possible?

Thank you in advance!

  • Good question. I suspect this may be a limitation of how Core MIDI handles Network, so the app may have no choice but all or nothing. Could you use Bluetooth MIDI for the iPad instead? It allows connection to specific sources.

  • Thank you for your swift reply!

The issue is that even if I don't use the MIDI features of Audiobus at all, the app still connects to all MIDI sessions it can find on the network. Using Bluetooth MIDI would not solve this issue, unfortunately.

I've downloaded Midiflow as well today which allows you to use RTP-MIDI without automatically connecting to all sessions on the network, so I feel like this is something that could be changed in the implementation of Audiobus.

Yes. It looks like AUM may allow selection as well. Unfortunately, Audiobus is pretty much stable now, so updates could be a long time coming. It might be best to find another app to do what you need.

  • AUM seems to do the job well, thank you for your recommendation!

I think I'll use that for now, but would love to see network MIDI improved in Audiobus in the long term as well
