Test protocol for synth app?

I’m looking for some kind of testing protocol for synth apps, like a guide to follow of some kind, instead of randomly playing around. I am beta testing an app and I feel I need some guidance on this since I am a noob in this department😁.

Thanks in advance!

Touch every knob. Do things the developer would not expect someone to do.

Man, I am all over it😂. That’s why I feel I could do with some structure but every knob and slider from left to right will do for now. Testing in DAWs, MIDI learn and hardware next. Problem is, I am getting lost and start to play around with the damned thing because it sounds so good. Stay focused, let the Force guide you. I know😊.

  • Also, try to set up some classic sounds, Model D or Juno. Add lots of modulation. Make sure things connect and work as expected.

I agree with what @espiegel123 said but you’re also doing right by simply playing it like someone else would if they bought the app.

I would suggest making a lot of patches with tons of modulation. Try sequencing it every various bpm with different sequencers. Open as many instances as possible with a sequence playing on each one. Turn lots of knobs while playing and while sequence is running. Try it in every host you have, etc.

  • If it is an AUv3, make sure it works in the various host apps you have lying around. Automation and mixdown problems seem fairly common with new releases. Preset management and user file access problems come up a lot, too.

  • Also test automation, host sync and fast AUv3 parameter modulation.
Checking delayed responses to program changes (if supported) is another thing.
Open up as many synth instances as possible in different DAWs (!) and see how well it goes. This is also the best test for CPU load at a certain audio buffer size.
Check how well it handles large amounts of (MIDI) note and parameter control data.
Check if automation is reflected on the UI properly in all cases.
Check if different iOS font sizes don't corrupt the UI display in some way.
Check how well multi-finger gestures work with the UI.
Check if the sound is OK when rendered offline in DAWs.
Check preset management, load and save with the project in different DAWs.
Check UI consistency at different resolutions and AUv3 window sizes.
Check if the synth works on different iDevices and different iOS versions.
Check if e.g. the iPhone Dynamic Island covers the UI where it's undesirable in different orientations.
Check how forgiving the app is regarding preset import, export, preset naming.
Check if standalone and AUv3 version sync their presets properly.
Check if preset banks can be exported and imported.
Check if presets can be copy/pasted and re-arranged inside or between banks.
Check if presets and banks are available in the iOS Files app.

There are more for sure, this is just what I usually do (from memory)

  • Thanks to all of you, great help!

    🙏
