Subwoofer with optical connector [Solved]
I am replacing a subwoofer from our TV sound system that only has an optical connector. If it’s possible I’d like to integrate it into my music system, but haven’t been able to find a connection solution from online searches.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how this can be done (preferably without too much expense)?
It’s an active subwoofer, and my existing system is active speakers connected from a mixer via XLR cables.
My thought was to look for a standalone crossover, but I can’t find one with the appropriate inputs and outputs.

If I understand correctly, you are trying to run a 2.1 setup for your TV. Left, right, and sub. No center channel. You could connect any output from your mixer to any powered sub that has a low pass filter. For example, you could run a cable from the headphone output on the mixer to the RCA inputs on your sub.
Other way round. The subwoofer is coming from the 2.1 setup on my TV and I’m seeing if I can integrate it with my music setup which is currently stereo, with the added problem that the subwoofer only has an optical audio input.
The Behringer UCA 202 is a cheap USB bus powered class compliant interface with a Toslink out. I guess your sub works also as an "amp" and has connectors for speakers?
Yes, it’s an active speaker, but it only has one optical input and no outputs. This is why I’m struggling to find a solution.
The Behringer also has RCA/Cinch outs, but I'm not sure if they can be used at the same time with the Toslink. On my unit there is no switch, so it might be possible. If this would work then you could hook up the sub via Toslink and other speakers using the RCA outs.
Thanks, but it’s too limited in input and outputs to be usable. It would need XLR outputs for the other speakers at least.
What’s the sub?
It’s an older Sony model that’s designed to be used for a TV system (hence the single optical input).
So asking the obvious but no speaker cable inputs either then?
No, no inputs other than the optical, and no outputs. It’s designed for a TV 2.1 system, but I’m wondering if I can use it or maybe I’ll donate it to Goodwill if not.
So you’re looking for something like a cheap ADC with audio in and Toslink out by the sounds of it
Wrong image. This type of thing https://www.amazon.ca/Analog-Converter-Aluminum-Optical-Coaxial/dp/B085XS1PMG/ref=asc_df_B085XS1PMG/
Pretty much, but I have XML outputs on the mixer and XML inputs on my near field speakers. Something like the above would work if it would also do audio through with XML connectors (or 1/4” I guess if I use XML to 1/4” cables).
You might end up wanting to get a new sub rather than this but I would do XLR to RCA cables into ADC RCA to Toslink into sub…
BTW I just added a 10” RSL Speedwoofer sub to my system and it sounds killer. Not cheap though…
That’s probably the way to go, but I wondered if I could find a cheap solution to use this one.
Dual XLR to RCA $12 https://www.amazon.ca/Cable-BELIPRO-Stereo-Connection-Microphone/dp/B09QNT8JPZ
RCA to Toslink ADC $12 https://www.amazon.ca/Analog-Converter-Aluminum-Optical-Coaxial/dp/B085XS1PMG/ref=asc_df_B085XS1PMG/
$24 solution that might work
It’s a little too late now as it’s at Goodwill…
Oh well, I’ll invest in one at some point.
OK, I wish you tight bass in the future! 🔊🔊
Sometimes a TV audio sub can do more damage to music than good so might be for the best.
