Decent Sampler finally fixed?!

huge update this morning.

whoa i never thought the day would come. it was getting pretty bad with so many crashes and wonky problems. hopefully this update has cleaned some things up. god damn i love the idea of decent sampler and want it to flourish.

  • I'd be careful here. DS is an app where an update is usually followed by a flurry of corrections to new bugs. I know this one seems to be mainly a bug fix, but I'm going to wait a month for any follow-ups. Let others be the pioneers.

lol so true. youre right. precarious terrain here. i just got excited

Is that the new update, 1.9.14, or an older version?

  • Haven’t updated yet but it can’t be any worse than it’s been acting for me lately lol at least I hope not.

      1. I have been using it as standalone and in AUM all this this week, not knowing that it was a glitch fest. I just deleted the APP for now until I hear from ya'll that everything is now A-OK as I was so frustrated and I did'nt know what I kept doing wrong! Thanks everyone for the latest news on this APP. It has so much potential but I would not buy any upgrade packs until everything gets sorted. I really hope it does! Cheers, ED

bruh its been so bad lately. thats why this update with all the bug fixes gave me hope. havent gotten to play with it yet but maybe its false hope. figured id start this thread at least to see how its working for others.

  • I see there’s a newer update. I’ll give that a run tonight.

  • I'm thinking about maybe removing it. Instruments taking up mega space. Last time I used it the app crashed while recording.

Major headache man. And it’s taking up 30gb of space which is severely lacking on my iPad. I’m tempted to delete it but there are a handful of sounds I really don’t wanna be without but then I think…at what cost? Lol. If this update doesn’t fix it I’ll probably just go ahead and let it go.

  • I doubt bugs will ever get fixed without a major overhaul and it doesn't seem to be a priority.

On the bright side, as the format is simply zipped samples, it's easy to extract them and pick up the ones you like to insert them into your favorite sampler. I even prefer a single-sample instrument that works over a multi sample one that fails!

  • Though DS is obviously not optimized particularly well for iOS, I’m still really impressed by the project. Lots of great free sounds, and reasonable prices for everything else. And as described, having access to the samples is a huge plus. Hoping they add streaming from attached devices, as that would ease the burden on users with limited space.

Agreed but users (myself included) all seem to have problems running from things like external drives. So we’d need Apple to weigh in and optimize that as well though I doubt they will since they want to force people to upgrade into newer, higher storage iPads.

I agree. I’m gonna go through today and pick some favorites to import elsewhere and probably delete the app for now. Hope it’ll be fully realized someday but for now I can’t justify losing 30+ gb on an app that I can’t use often for fear of crashes and freezes mid project.

What apps do you have trouble streaming from and what hardware are you streaming from? I’ve seen many people streaming happily from ssd’s from the Gospel Musicians apps and I think AudioLayer though not sure of the latter.

Well I never said anything in my comment about having problems with apps, but about the iPad itself. I made an entire post about it a while back. You really need a desktop to properly use an SSD with an iPad with any consistent results which is what I’ve read form almost everyone that has weighed in on the subject…not sure where you got the idea about me saying the apps were the problem.

I didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers. Your post gives the impression that one can’t successfully use SSDs for disk steaming with iPads. I am saying that many use them successfully.

  • I can disk stream fine with my 2TB Toshiba (DS and Gen9 iPad). Do you have a SSD Mr.Strange? Might want to hold off with your invalid opinions.

How is my opinion invalid? I made a post covering this a few months back with issues I had with the SSD that I owned and multiple other people commented their issues and there are various threads on this website of other people doing the same. But since you got it work flawlessly that means no one else’s experience is valid? 😂

    Ridiculous comment lol

Some do yes but most seem to encounter at least some issues which has been covered on this forum many times. I don’t see how saying Apple should optimize disk streaming gives the impression I was saying no one can do it successfully or that certain apps don’t work? I guess I’m missing something

Your post gives an overall impression that most people have trouble with diskstreaming...the threads you mention don't indicate that MOST people have problems. You can't extrapolate that sort of data from discussions here, Some people have some problems with some devices in some contexts. Many people having some problems with external storage in some contexts is different from the impression your posts are giving. Many of the discussions here have been about different sorts of issues unrelated to diskstreaming.

Yes, Apple should improve reliability for using external drives. That is different from the impression that most people have trouble with disk-streaming (with appropriate hardware).

“Extrapolate the data” lol dude I’m not doing a research paper. I was replying to someone else saying that some users have issues with SSDs on iOS, and I’ve read comments (not just here) of people saying the same thing. Is it really such an issue with you that it has to be picked apart to this extent? You’re really twisting the meaning and intention behind my comment to make this little argument work, but if it makes you feel better go ahead 👍🏻

I’m bowing out so as not to derail this thread any further.

  • I updated to the latest version. Haven't had a stuck note since so looking good and stable on that front.

The update did seem to break the settings in all previous songs though - Decent Sampler AU loads in track and knows what preset it should have - but it isn't loaded and any tweaks or tuning missing. Easy enough to put back in place as happened to recall the settings for all main projects but probably worth noting settings or bouncing any existing parts down prior to updating.

I updated as well but haven’t had the chance to test it out. Glad to hear it’s working. Sucks the state saving seems broken though. I have a handful of tracks with it saved.

You know, the recent replacement the Library tab with “File Browser” leads me to hope that as mooted above, one will be able to specify custom source folders on external drives in the future. That would probably require platform-specific engagement that’s beyond the development model being used, but I might ask Mr Hilowitz if that’s the direction.

This isn’t tantalising just because Pianobook’s DS patch selection is already massive and addictive (although I do think it’s waned in quality over the last couple of years), but because people might be doing more conversions of Kontakt libraries. Has anybody tried this conversion script with Kontakt? But maybe by the time reaches critical mass, orchestral scoring grade physical modelling will be abundant, affordable and wonderful. 🙄

  • Does anyone know a workaround to buy the full versions? I’m stuck on “Getting”..doesn’t seem to be connecting to the Decent Samples website

In the past I bought on my computer, downloaded the library and transferred it over using docs transfer. Of course it doesn’t appear in the storefront as being purchased but you can load it in like any other piano book library

There seem to be several apps with this issue lately, especially in Logic. I've reluctantly started using a running notes doc to record patches on promising songs that I might come back to.
