Anyone know how Pandora radio works?
I’m based in the U.K. I go under the title The Belle Vue Zoo. I have a track which has been accepted onto Pandora radio in the U.S. They tell me I now have a radio station? I can see I’m getting some plays as I’m on Pandora amp but I have no idea how the radio thing works and can’t get on in the U.K.. Specifically does this mean that my future tracks go onto this station? Does anybody have experience or advice on Pandora to share?
Comments
From my prior experience, a radio station is simply something that intermittent plays other people’s music similar to that of the artist whom you’ve started the radio station for. If said Artist has a huge discography, you’ll hear a higher ratio of their music, but it also depends how long you listen to the radio station for.
As only a listener, I don’t have any insights on whether artists have any control over radio stations. I’m guessing no, it’s all algorithm based and maybe tags too.
We don't have Pandora here - did you look on their web site for info?
@Blipsford_Baubie is correct. A radio station isn't a fixed discography of your tracks. It just means that the "station" will focus on tracks and artists similar to yours. Your tracks may or may not get heavier weighting, but of course if you only have one or two songs, they're not going to get played very often.
When you search for and find an artist, selecting the artist creates a "station" in your playlist, but it's nothing like a Soundcloud account or anything like that.
The same will happen with any search term. For instance, "O' Holy Night" was created as a station when I was searching for Christmas music.
Radio stations can wander far afield of the original search term. The algorithm takes into account thumbs-up and thumbs-down on songs, and adjusts accordingly.
Prolly we here could all help boost your track by searching for you and giving your track a thumbs-up.
Thanks so much all of you for responding. It sounds like the kind of thing once you use it you get used to it. It’s helpful to know the more tracks you have the more listeners you may get. I can’t find what music the algorithm likens my track to which would have been interesting. It’s no big deal I was just intrigued to know a bit more. It will be interesting to see if any of my future releases make it on there and if that results in any plays.
A lot of Pandora users listen on SiriusXM (satellite radio) in their cars.
SiriusXM acquired Pandora in 2019.
Since then it's been a rough few years for Pandora, but the SiriusXM launch of TikTok Radio may signal an upturn for them. (Anyone have experience with TikTok Radio?)
I like the Pandora AMP site for artists, and in my experience Pandora has panned out better than others (e.g., Spotify).
If you figure out how to get more listeners, be sure to tell us.
I think it’s unlikely as my options to do anything pro active seem very limited on the Amp site maybe it will improve. I think it may help if my next track is taken up but we shall see. I am getting some traction on Tik Tok but I’m not sure it’s helping with listens. Still one step at a time eh?
Searched for Belle Vue Zoo. Result:
Champion of the World - The Belle Due Zoo
(Nice track! Liked.)
Similar Artists: The Mekons, Pere Ubu, Ween, Jonathan Richman, Craig O'Manion
I tried to play A.I. (2024) which I'm guessing is the track you referred to in the OP? Pandora wouldn't let me play it directly because I'm no longer on Premium.
Pandora then appeared to lose it's mind and followed with a scmaltzy, horrible, Yes song I'd never heard, called Luminosity. Horrible (and I'm a huge Yes fan), and absolutely nothing like Champion of the World or any of those bands.
After a thumbs down on that one Pandora got its shit together and queued up a nice dirty reggae tune, Young Man by Split Away, Neutral Milk Hotel by Little Birds, then ... A Song for Putin by Belle Vue Zoo 👍🏼
@ZooBaaDoo - have you tried downloading the Pandora app? It seems to be available on the UK App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/pandora-music-podcasts/id284035177
A free account should be all you need.
After a few more pretty good tracks by other artists, A.I. came up. 👍🏼
Really good stuff.
You should also be able to just go to www.pandora.com and search for yourself.
Thank you so much for this taking this time is really good of you. I still can’t get the Pandora app it says not available in my country? I’m still not absolutely sure what the difference is between streaming (where you search for the artist) and radio. If Champion of the world is on Pandora radio that’s news to me as in their email they said only the track A.I. was on radio?? Big thanks again🙏🏼🙏🏼.
You may be able to use Pandora through a browser if the app isn't available in your country. https://www.pandora.com
I tried to explain, there's no real such thing as stations in the sense that you're thinking of. They're just starting points of search results. If I search for an artist and then hit play on what comes up, that creates a "station" by that in my pandora play list. It's not something global. Same if I search for a song and then select the song - a station will be created with the name of the song.
Once created (again, it's just created in my account, not as a global thing), the algorithm chooses what it thinks are similar tracks or artists. You can fine-tune that station by giving thumbs-up and thumbs-down for the tracks it picks.
I don't know anything about whether they inform artists when their songs get pulled into Pandora's pool. I assume it must be doing some kind of hoovering up of other publicly available tracks? Interesting question.
Thanks again. Here’s what the email said ‘Congratulations!
The Pandora Music Analysis team has created your Pandora radio station listeners can now play your station in the Pandora app.’ I was already streaming on Pandora so maybe there is a difference here in getting on the app? There must be some difference because I’m seeing play whereas before I had 2 😂😂 and that was over two years?! Anyway it’s definitely an improvement which I will take with good grace!
There's no difference between the app and the browser version. The email is telling you nothing. They're just getting your attention.
Trust me - there are no "stations" in Pandora in the sense that you're thinking. Stations are created per user on the fly based on pressing play on any search result.
As for the change in plays? It's probably because of this thread. AB forum gets a lot more visitors than you think. Only a minority of people comment. You're up to 180 views so far.
Likes really boost the insertion of your tunes into other "stations", and thus plays. Searches for your artist name probably do as well. It could be that search results for your artist name wouldn't have produced results before now.
I think what may be happening here also has to do with your artist name being associated with the style of other artists as I noted above. I don't know if that's an automated process or if someone actually makes those linkages. It could be that the email is informing you that your name has been added to some index or other that boots search results.
At any rate, the part about the app vs. pandora in general is of no significance. I get exactly the same results searching for your artist name from the web (and not even logged in) as I do when logged into the app.
Out of curiosity, do you get paid anything for plays? I assume it's infinitesimal if so, but anything?
Because I’ve only ever had two plays I’m not sure but I promise to let you know the amount when I can as it will be on my DistroKid data. It takes about three months for these plays to show. It will be pennies (cents 😂) of course but I will be able to compare pays per play v other streaming sites which is of slight interest.
