La Noirmoutrine [4Pockets Progressions]

A straight ahead blowing tune created on my travels with iPad and a 2 octave NI A25 keyboard. Instrumentation inspired by Bay area band Ratatet. Middle 8 suggested by Progressions which also generated the arp under the piano solo. Thanks for the nudge @LinearLineman.

SWAM Bassoon, Tenor Trombone, Double Bass, Free Vibes (Pro), Ravenscroft, Digistix 2.

  • Came here because of the name, as I was born and grew up not too far from Noirmoutier (Guérande if it speaks to you). Great composition and arrangement skills. You put the SWAM family to great use !

  • Lovely! I love the arrangement, especially the double bass + drums to support all the other instruments. The piano solo is also great to hear, nice work.

  • Sounds great, very nice arrangement! A nod to Brubeck. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you all for taking the time to comment. As notable creators yourselves, you know the boost they give.

I did consider posting with a wacky title as recently that seems to have been good for traffic. Didn’t think anyone would pickup on a tiny island off the Atlantic coast of France but small world! Thanks for your comment on the SWAM instruments @JanKun, I was surprised how well they responded without expression data.

Pleased you liked the piano solo @unlink - the 2 octave keyboard limited me to a sort of locked-hands style - it just happened.

And a thank you for commenting on the arrangement @pbelgium. Partly it was shaped because the chords from Progressions were not so easy to improvise over. It was a colourful set of instruments to paint with.

  • Great playing throughout, Nice to have a bassoon in the mix and I enjoyed the bouncy rhythm 👌

  • This is great, Andy. I love the more advanced chords and progressions you've used. Your instrumentation, performance, and themes really bring out these progressions. Congratulations! Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Hi @GeoTony. Thanks for your comments both here and on SoundCloud. I think the bassoon is what makes the track. I owe that idea to Ratatet https://open.spotify.com/album/0rKgeWwu5LAawolQ0NzyAW?si=OtCFz8B3QiipbtV_03_tfw
It’s a (nice) challenge to keep up with everything you put out. Always interesting angles.

Thanks for listening @dcollett and for working with Paul to give us the Progressions app. I’ve barely scratched the surface of what that app can do. It’s revolutionary in a very understated way. Formal modulation seems superseded by just being able to pick what sounds good.

I’ve just put up a YouTube short to show the chord sequence Progressions came up with for the middle 8 of the tune. More info in the description.

Thanks again both for your interest.

  • Man, I really dig this! Everything, the chord progressions, the syncopation, the stabs, the lead lines. I always love the brush drum type kits. That bass line is walking along great with everything. I love all the parts solo sections! You've got a great knack for playing the instrument lines like the player for that instrument would play it. Like you make the brass sound like a brass line, oboe sound like an oboe line, etc.

    Top shelf stuff, Andy!

  • Knowing what Andy is capable of @drez he probably did play all of those instruments 🎸🥁🎺🎷🪈🥁🎻

  • Cool jazz! Love the arrangement. Sounds like live jazz players who have been together for a while. Reminds me of a night at the Chicago Jazz Showcase. Very well done!

    Yup; the bassoon!

  • Glad this resurfaced, Andy. I like this

  • Really nice!
