Can you explain this to me? I don’t understand every other word.

  • Step away from the YouTube, you’ve reached the end. 😂

  • He explains it, the video title updates with the number of views with scripting, it still works now, but one day it won't :)

  • He’s making documentaries for computer programmers and users that provide context… he’s got one on AI that I need to watch.

This particular topic is history… Web 2.0 is broken because it could not scale. I think crypto as it’s currently implemented will hit a similar wall in processing required but until it does it will make money out of computer cycles. That should be outlawed because it’s using energy to build a ponzi scheme where early adopters take money from late adopters and it goes up and up until…

It’s probably more the concepts and vocabulary of computer science (and his breathless delivery) that make him hard to follow. But I watch a ton of Brit TV and maybe that helps too.

Find something that explains AI before you get asked to stop sharing videos… have you seen the one where the mother cat brings a sick kitten to the man and the kitten… I won’t spoil the ending. It’s a tear jerker.

Or the little kid that can sing like a pop star.

  • Sad that’s he’s semi retired now but I understand why. Tom is one of the best to ever do it though. Been watching him for a decade now.

  • Tom Scott is a legend! Ten years of great videos. ❤️

    • The title of the video is updated by a communication protocol that runs on a scheduled basis.
    • This is possible because YouTube makes it possible to request the number of views through a web request, and makes it possible to set the title by another web request.

      • Just as a server gets a request from you to display a page and sends the data to display that page, a server can also be set up to return just one bit of information if asked in a different way.
      • In the same way, if you write a post, and hit Post Comment on this forum, the server updates what it displays in the thread. It could be set up to accept automated posts if wanted.
    • "Web 2.0" was the moniker given to the potential of automated integration between sites. It was supposed to be a revolution. In some ways it is, but its effectiveness is limited because of various factors:

      • If it can be used, it can be abused.
      • It can get in the way of monetization.
      • Things change on the web all the time, sometimes this breaks integration.
    • It's a risk whenever you depend on something out of your control for your livelihood.

    • Everything on the web (and life in general) is transient. This should be considered when deciding if something is worth doing.
    • Some temporary things are worth doing just for the experience of doing them.

I see lots of parallels to iOS music making. These apps we use, the devices, the operating system, are transitory. This should be factored into our decisions about how attached we become to any of it.

I naturally regard everything on iOS as a consumable that's going to break or disappear at some time. That's a hard pill to swallow for others though.

  • Thanks @wim. Sounds like you’re describing entropy.

Yep. He says as much in the video.

I wish this forum had a way to rate/thumps up comments 👍

Didn't posts here previously have a thumbs up/thumbs down system?

For a little while several years ago. It was removed after seeming to not serve any good purpose.

A few times a year the same back and forth over why it would be good vs. bad ensues. Last time I remember was 2-3 months ago.

  • i missed all this discussion. I would way more often express my gratitude that way. Don‘t know whats so bad about this. The youtube or facebook way, only positive „signs“ allowed.

Or just be sure not to total anything. Competing for "points" (or trying to damage others with them) leads to all kinds of negative side effects. I get the idea that people just want to acknowledge / thank people without making a whole post for it. That is one of the (only) things I like about Slack and Discord.

Just my own thoughts. I'm not in favor of asking our gracious host to spend any time tweaking the forum, if such a tweak is even possible.

One of the things I enjoy about this forum is the lack of a like button on everything. It's a nice break from every other place out there.

Since you can flag posts, you should be able to “like” posts. But this is not my site. I respect the owner Michael’s decision.

Flagging has a specific purpose, it sends an alert to moderators that action may be required on a post. It serves to relieve moderators of the weight of viewing every single post. No-one but moderators even know if a post has been flagged.

    That's a wholly different thing.

I know what the function is, but both rely on users for feedback. Both flags and other interactions are initiated by visitors/users here.
