“The Storm Before the Calm” **update + extended version** Made 100% in Logic on iPad
Similar to my recent track I posted here, this is another track in the same vein. The main difference this time was this one was made in Logic on the iPad from blank screen to uploaded. Which is a first for me. Giving myself constraints works… I usually don’t have the courage (for want of a better word) to keep things so simple from a structural standpoint. I tend to try and have a more verse/chorus/bridge type format. Feels a bit like cheating

Lovely. I love the textures and the simple but brooding melodies throughout. It's much more than a drone, because simple textural drones can get a bit boring, this track has melodic elements that make it much more interesting to listen to. I love the way the underlying constant harmony is used as a scaffold for all the other elements.
When I think “drone” this is not what comes to mind.
I don’t think not having a set structure of intro/chorus etc, is cheating. In fact you can’t fall back to a safe spot, you need to keep the composition moving forward while being interesting.
Which you did quite well in this track. Congratulations.

Very nice! Definitely not a drone but, who cares it sounds really good. I started to think on Tangerine Dream which are as much accolade you can get in the genre (<-- insert name of ditto here, just electronic maybe).

I know what I’m trying to do in my head, I just don’t have a clue about genres — ‘electronic’ is a nice catch-all.

Not talking about instruments nor sounds choices, but there is the kind of underlying tension in this track that could be heard in a Tool song. Give a call to Maynard James Keenan, he might be willing to add some vocals on top 😉!

The main synth is Dagger and a home made patch.
I underestimated the amount of bass Dagger generates… this mix fails my car test. The speakers are shaking the bloody doors off!
with regards to Tool, do you have a suggestion of an album to start with to rediscover them? Ive been aware of them for ages but managed to kind of miss getting into them properly at the time.
Though not a metal or progressive metal fan at all, I was really into Ænima upon its release in 1996 and I still believe it is their best, mainly because MJK lyrics on this album resonated with me.
Lateralus and 10,000 days ,though some of the fans favourites, didn't really catch my attention because at that time, I moved to other styles of music.
I enjoyed their latest album Fear Inoculum released in 2019 because at that time I was really into odd time signature and polyrhythms and this album is full of that. But definitely Ænima is IMO the best entry to their discography.

This song has nothing in common with the title. Darn you @klownshed, haha! Instead, it’s chillwaveish and meditative, one of those tracks that keeps you concentrated when you're coding, relaxes you, and keeps you focused on work. Fantastic! 🤩

And yeah really love the Tron soundtrack. Apparently Joseph Trapanese had an awful lot more to do with the soundtrack than he was credited for… but in any case it’s a fantastic score.
