Question: DAW that lets you preview and import midi files (EDIT: answer found!)

EDIT: I just found out the app Helium can be loaded as a midi fx and has a preview function. Thank God!

I’m looking for an Ipad DAW that lets me go through my library of midi files and preview them with the instrument selected on the track. For example: I have Beathawk loaded with the acoustic drums expansion and want to go through my collection of midi drum files to build a drum track that way. Does something like that exist? To me it is a very basic and indispensable feature. Maybe Loopy Pro will be able to do this in the future…

Not a direct DAW found to audition your MIDI-files, but the great file Manager SAMPLE CRATE is great for previewing all sorts of file, MIDI, Wav, Flac, AIFF, Apple Loops…

It even glue together files to a new file (chain)…

Perhaps you already have this, otherwise, buy it now!

  • @HolyMoses Thanks for the suggestion! I didn’t know that. Does samplecrate have some sort of built in midi sounds to audition, lets say, drums sounds?

Yes, if the MIDI-file contains info of drumtrack (channel 10 as an example).
There’s drums, piano, synths, strings, bass etc etc…

    Sample Crate is awesome!

  • You can preview MIDI files in AudioShare as well.

Yes you can, BUT, it sounds awful!
Audioshare use the same lame instrument sound to all tracks in the MIDI-files, so, useless to "preview" MIDI-files...

  • If you are looking to save money on apps, one option would be to load up BeatHawk (since you already have it) as an AUv3 instrument in GarageBand, and then load the MIDI file into the BeatHawk track in GarageBand. The one drawback is that you can't drag and drop MIDI files using slideover (as far as I know) directly into a GB track. You will have to use the Apple Loops icon in the upper right and then the files app to browse to the MIDI files. This will add them to the list of available files within GB, and you can then you can drag it from there. BeatHawk has two options to play MIDI input, either sending the input to each of the 16 pads based on the MIDI note, or you can select a pad and have it send all the MIDI to that pad. If you have a BeatHawk multi-layer patch loaded, such as Acoustic Drums, you can use a single pad. If you want to import your drum samples into BeatHawk, that can only be done one per pad, but you can save it as a project. If you're interested in more details on that, I can put together a quick video to show it.

The option to use an app with a built-in MIDI player is a good one if that works for you, and I tried Samplecrate (which I didn't know could do this) and it did a nice job, even better then a couple other MIDI player apps I use. But if you want to test out your MIDI files with specific drum samples, then the method above is one way to go, but there are many other options if you want to use different apps to load the MIDI file and load the drum samples, and it may be a bit more complex and add additional cost.

  • Media Assistant can also let's you preview midi. And you can install your own soundfont for that preview too

Indeed! I have Media Assistant and I forgot about that feature! I've tried it with a few different GM soundfont files, varying from 25 MB to 1.6 GB and they all worked fine. It's really convenient because you can just browse from MA using the Files app interface and preview it with a simple tap. I'm planning to do a video showing it in action with some different SoundFonts and MIDI demo files. There's a real nice drumset soundfont that will play exported MIDI files from the Lumbeat drummer apps or Drum Session by Ngo Minh Ngoc (previously Blue Mangoo), for example.

@anhnd101 - Please confirm- this feature is built in with no IAP required, correct? I can't tell because I have most of them.

But the question is, can it preview/play multitrack MIDI-files (with different sounds/instruments) just like Sample Crate app?

Yes - it does - I have a multitrack of Holst's "The Planets" and it plays an array of instruments using the default soundfont that is built into the app, and the same for the other soundfont files that I loaded.

  • As promised, short video showing Media Assistant in action playing MIDI files:

Yeah, this feature is free. You can just use it without paying anything.
