favorite samples for Koala?

I'm really getting into Koala. I need new samples. I have tons of drum one-shots already, lots of samples and loops I've made, but I want something new and inspiring. I like lo-fi, hip hop, weird electronic stuff, house, techno, post rock.

I'm not worried about the cost, I don't want to search through hundreds of mediocre samples to find a couple of interesting ones, so quality over quantity.

What are you using, what have you heard that's impressed you?

  • I stopped using packs for drums because it was a real hassle with choice paralysis and sounds static if not modulated. Now I use drum machines. Closest to any pack must be romplers like Waverly XL and Syntronik. Bad answer I know. The samples from mars essentials pack should cover any standard electronic drum machines. I think finding your own sample packs is a big part of the sound and I cannot live without tweaking stuff. So constantly sorting and setting up modulation with sample packs became a real chore. Get Hammerhead, it has the essential samples.

I guess I wasn't clear, I'm not looking for one shot drum samples, I have so many. I'm looking for sounds, ambient stuff, riffs, I don't know, good stuff to chop and manipulate. I've got a pretty large bank of samples I've created myself (acoustic instruments and synths for logic's exs24 sampler, loops) but I just want some sounds I've never heard before to inspire me.

I'll check out samples from mars. Thanks.

  • These are made for Koala so that saves a lot of time and there are many styles and types to choose from:

  • McD, thank you so much.

    .

  • I really like loopcloud, I mean it goes against the not wanting to sift through loads of samples, but it does check the quality over quantity box, when it comes to what you actually purchase. Plus if you're on desktop, too, they tend to have nice freebies (recently NI Super 8) to go with the subscription (cancel anytime, keep what you purchased).

  • @wim @tyslothrop1
I appreciate the suggestions. Both the linked forum thread and loopcloud have a lot to look through, digging in now.

Samplemarket is a good source for House, UKG etc.

Tracklib is great resource for pre-cleared records you can sample from legally.

    Leftfielddrumbreaks for drum breaks

Here some evergreen library music labels, often used for movies in the 70s and 80s:

    KPM

    De Wolfe Vinyl

Janko Nilovic who had various releases on KPM has also some stuff on Tracklib.

Haha, sorry. It was my way of saying I'm interested too, and watching this thread.

I tend to stay away from samples to avoid having too much stuff on my iPad taking up space but lately I've been using apps that sample a lot more so I'm thinking about this too.

I think I'm mostly looking for loops to cut up as well since drum machines cover my one shots easily.

That said I might just make my own. I'm wondering if setting up a template of various midi pattern generators fed into various synths and sound generators and ending at koala to sample and cut up the result would make me just as happy/take just as much time to find something good as hunting through sample banks. 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • I pull up youtube and record samples from there with a screen recording. Then chop to your hearts desire. I use a shortcut to seperate the sound from the video and then load it into Koala. No need to buy samples.

  • Sound test rooms got a new koala vid today, should be called ipadding 101

Same, but use a downloader instead of screen recorder. Then usually split the stems before playing with things.

If you want to try AI stem separation you get 10 minutes that can be screen recorded from lalal.ai, pretty sick quality compared to the regular apps doing it locally, alot less artifacts and more musical results

There are so many free samples out there, literally just search and make sure the site and file is safe before downloading. I use VirusTotal a free web app to scan any link or file to make sure it’s safe to download.

Some of my favorite sites are Samples From Mars, Drum Drops, Cymatics, Reverb, etc…

For YouTube you also have the option to use Tube Audio Unit, or Web Audio Player (no video, audio only) to have the audio piped through in your favorite DAW/host, where you can do whatever you like with it.

Also Coproducer Output is a free Ai Sample Pack generator, type in the style, key, BPM, etc and get 4 packs put together to download if you so choose.

  • Great thread. Also check out the 2024 desktop samples & plugins thread for sales and freebies on sample packs.

  • Doug at SoundTestRoom just posted a Koala sampling tutorial today too…

  • I’ve gotten a lot of use from the BlankFor.ms samples that are available on Gumroad.

I particularly like this one: https://blankforms.gumroad.com/l/blursamplepack?layout=profile

  • I like freesound.org for more field recording fodder. Requires a free account, but once you sign up, you have all those recordings at your fingertips.

haha. I wasn't sure if I was getting a side-eye because I know nothing about sampling.

I spent a couple of weeks making loops for myself to chop, and I sifted through all the tracks we (my wife and I) made to date and culled some loops from that. They're ok I guess, but I'm already familiar with the sounds. Just using the one shots that come with Koala was more fun for me so I thought I'd ask about samples here. And this thread is a gold mine so far.

@kirmesteggno That's a great list, thank you, I am going to check out all those links today.

@TurnItUp Thanks for the idea about sampling YouTube, I just got a subscription last week and I can download videos, so that's a great idea.

@tekk very cool! I tried a file at lalal.ai and it did a good job separating. Very nice. I bought Serato Sample when it was on sale last fall, I'm sorry I did that. There's nothing I like about it, lalal.ai did a much better job separating the stems then Serato did, I feel regret for that impulsive purchase.

Really, everybody, thank you so much for all these ideas.

Yeah Tube AU and I think Media Assistant can do it too.

Don't forget that Koala can separate stems too, on its own. You might need the samurai addon tho.

  • Also, beepstreet has an internet radio auv3 that just rocks for easy sampling.

    Check here: https://99sounds.org/

I’ve found some very varied stuff there. Organised into packs. Generally I’ve found either the entire pack to be useful, or not. I’ve rarely gone sifting though picking just a few from a large pack.

    EDIT: forgot to say: FREE

  • The ones recorded by myself, at home, doing nutty stuff with everything one can think of. So fun. Radio recordings can be really entertaining too. Sample packs are okay but never the same as something home brewed.

  • This thread turned into a nice trove of ideas, some I was not familiar with.

  • Yeah, I am overwhelmed by the coolness of this forum right now.

Also, I need to say Koala is my favorite thing on my iPad, it is a beautiful piece of software.
And thank you to Doug and Jo, sevenape, Gavinski, and NervousCook$ for helping me learn how to use it.
