How can I accomplish this in Dawnbeat? Or can I?

Hello,
I am trying to use Dawnbeat for a unique application. I’m a sound Mixer for feature films and I’ve programmed a series of pads for sound effects that I’m going to be pushing through a mixer to an earwig that talent will be wearing. I’ve got everything working so far great, but there are a couple of things that I can’t seem to figure out and I don’t know if I’m just doing something wrong or if it’s a limitation of the application.

Setting the pads to either shot or gate achieve two of my needs. However with shot there is something that is a bit annoying.
If I have a clip that is 30 seconds long and set to shot is there a way for me to press the pad once and have it play 15 seconds and then pause the sample and press the pad again when I want to hear the next 15 seconds?

How do you stop or pause a sample once it’s been triggered?

No. Samplers aren't really designed to be used that way generally. Neither Dawnbeat or Koala will give you that EXACT functionality.

Maybe for your use case you could split the sample into 2 slots have them set to shot and use the link pads (choke groups) function so that you can play half of the sample on one pad and at any time cut it off with the other half of the sample. You could also "link" an empty pad that would stop anything on the group that is playing.

You'd use a lot more pads, but it could work.

  • Thank you. Do you have any suggestions possibly for some DJing apps which may do just this?

  • Unfortunately this isn't a simple ask because there isn't any blatantly obvious musical benefits to pausing a sample, not a standard function in samplers or dj apps because of that.

My most concise and configurable suggestion would be to use Neon audio editor loaded into Loopy pro. Use one instance of Neon per sample. Neon appears to have a pause mode and can be set to be triggered by midi cc. In Loopy you could build an interface to trigger all your samplers easily.

  • I read your original post again and saw you asked if it's possible to STOP or pause a sample.

If just stopping a sample is enough (playing it again starts from the beginning) then you can use the link pads function in Dawnbeat. Make 1 pad have a sample of silence and then link it to whatever pad, all of them even. When you play that silent pad it'll cut off any playing sample it's linked to, essentially working like a stop button.

  • You could also use several instances of 4Pockets in AUM and MIDI-learn the various Start / Stop buttons.

  • OP doesn't mention if he has a controller. Seemed like he needs a full in the box solution
