edited February 13 in Other

Trying to record midi from a basic electronic kit.

What is the simplest cheapest way and will I just be able to hit record in Cubasis et.al.?

What kind of midi output does the kit have?

If it's 5-pin din then something like this should do: https://a.co/d/bXn4jNj - assuming you don't already have a midi capable interface and that you do have the Apple USB-3 Lightning adapter.

You'll get a lot better answers if you provide some more detail about what you're trying to send from and what you already have to work with.

  • @wim Perfect! I ordered one of those yesterday.

    Yes, it's a 5-Pin MIDI DIN output.

The one I ordered is midi 5pin to USBA but I have an A to lightning adapter.

Do you reckon most recording apps should recognize the input?

Hopefully the Apple USB connection kit, not something more generic, but maybe you'll get lucky if it's not.

If the iPad will recognize it than any app that can record midi will work.

Just hitting record works for me in Logic or Ableton Live on desktop, and I can’t see why it wouldn’t be the same with an iPad.

Nope, the cheap and nasty variety. :'( :#

  • So, my cheap little midi usb connection arrived. I have a USB to lightning adapter (not an apple one). The gadget shows up in "MIDI Check" but not any apps. The midi device power light comes on when connected. What do you reckon the issue is?

  • So what is the cheapest USB-A to lightning option that works with midi devices?

Apple USB-3 Lightning adaptor. Hands down.
The reason? You will buy cheaper ones and end up throwing them away when you run into incompatibilities out of the blue. You will waste a ton of time. You will have charging problems.

    Trust me.

(Case in point. Just tonight I was testing something with a 3rd party adapter that had been working fine for other things, because I couldn't locate my Apple adapter. I knew this is something that works, but it wouldn't work with the 3rd party adapter. Once I located the Apple adapter it worked instantly.

I was testing midi between two Apple devices via USB lightning cable.)

Try ShowMIDI p. It's free and reliable.

Hard to imagine why a midi port would be visible to MIDICheck but nothing else.

btw, at least where I live, buying direct from Apple.com has been an excellent experience. Fast free shipping, and (unexpectedly) competitive pricing. Plus no worries about stuff advertised as Apple product that actually isn't. It happens.

What country are you in? In the U.S. , the Apple lightning USB adapter is a lot less then $65.

@Ailerom Can you please post a pic of your MIDI adaptor?
I've had some cheap chinese ones that caused nothing but problems here...
Another option would be to plug in a pair of Bluetooth MIDI dongles, latency is usually low enough and no wires needed 😊

    Thanks, that helps.

  • Finally got it to work after buying a genuine Apple thingy. But strange goings on. The recording started but then after about 2 bars only 2 notes continue, like they are being held. Any thought?

Looks like you might need to check the kit output with a midi monitor to be sure that it’s sending proper note on and note off messages.

Be sure you don’t have a midi loop going on. The asiest way to do that might be just to disconnect the IN line to the e kit… if there is one.

It only has a midi out. Not much option with it other than midi channel and note assign. I'll have a look with ShowMidi when my drummer feels like, drumming.
