Connecting a 2017 iPad Pro (lightning) to Launchpad X

I'm trying to connect my Launchpad X to an iPad Pro 2017 model with lightning connector.

I've tried 2 different powered USB-C hubs with a USB-C to lightning connector, and I've also tried a lightning to USB "OTG" (with one USB-2 and lightning port) which doesn't work either.

In all cases, the launchpad logo lights up but does not enter the mode where it is recognised by the host.

Is there something I'm missing?

You probably are either not supplying enough power to the hub it my have the usb-c side of the cable upside down. Even the cable can fit in either orientation there is an up side and a downside.

What you tried is not entirely clear from your explanation. USB, including USB-C, is a top-down system, with one host computer connecting to many peripherals. You need to use a Lightning to USB adapter at your iPad. This will likely have a USB-A socket (the old "flat" kind). You need to connect the host port on the hub or dock to this socket. Other ports on the hub are slave ports and they will not work. For most hubs, the host port is a permanently-connected cable, though some use a connector. In either case, the host port should be clearly indicated.

Before bringing the hub or dock into the picture, you could try connecting the Launchpad directly to the Lightning USB adapter. It ought to power up if you connect power to the adapter as well.

I got a cheap copy that looks exactly like that, but it does not seem to be working properly...

  • OK after some fiddling I have got it working with the adapter above.... BUT, the Launchpad is cycling through connecting/disconnecting. Perhaps I do need the official Apple one. Unless the issue is my iPad connector (it's an old iPad).

This sounds more like not enough power. Have you connected your iPad charger to the extra port on the Lightning adapter?

It needs not just some power but enough. The Apple USB Charger is not sufficient to power LaunchPad X or Pro mk3. I need to use either a higher watt charger than Apple’s or a powered usb hub.

Yes. The power is coming directly from a 3.1A wall socket with USB charging ports, via a USB to lightning cable.

As I posted above, some chargers don’t provide sufficient power to power the Launchpad. The Apple one’s, for instance, don’t.

I'm trying also a 96W output from a laptop charger, with the same issue. Could it be the adapter that's causing the problem?

It could be the adapter or a cable. I recently had a situation where it was both.

Those USB charging ports often have a lower output limit for each port. The rated power value applies to the total output of all the ports. Check the specs.

You will not be getting 96W into a Lightning power port. That requires USB-C Power Delivery negotiation, which the Lightning port does not support. It should be enough to power your USB-C hub though, and the Launchpad connected through it. You may need to use the powered hub to have enough power for the Launchpad.

When you mention things you've tried, please be more specific about the actual hookups. Some of the combos you might try are not going to work at all; others might indicate an actual problem, but we cannot tell between them.

  • That Apple connector only supplies power to the iPad. It’s up to the iPad to provide power to the Launchpad, and your iPad’s Lightning port looks like it isn’t up to the task.

You need to plug a regular powered USB-A hub into the Apple iPad connector thingy. That will power connected peripherals.

    Welcome to dongle hell!

Ok got it. Ordering a powered USB hub. Will report back when that arrives! Thanks all
