Logic Pro - Clean up Project File
The track I'm currently working on was about 40MB in size. I then dragged an mp3 into Logic for referencing purposes, which understandably increased the file size to about 80MB (following conversion).
With referencing mostly complete I thought I'd bounce down a 4-bar loop of my reference track to save space, but incorrectly bounced the entire reference track down to audio, rather than the intended 4 bar loop(!)
No worries I thought, I'll delete both the reference track and the (identical) bounced reference track. I can always bring it back in at a later date. However, upon closing the project, I noticed the file-size was now at 120MB.
It appears Logic keeps some sort of a cache of all audio data whether it's been deleted from the track or not. A quick search on the issue shows me an article on how to delete the junk data on Logic for Mac ('Clean up Project Files'), but as far as I'm aware, there's no such feature in the iOS app, is that right?
Is anyone aware of any workarounds, or am I stuck with an unnecessarily large file? It's not a major issue, but the inefficiency of the situation really bugs me!
Comments
Going to follow this conversation hoping someone knows a workaround on iOS...
Hopefully Apple will add this function in future updates. Some of my projects weight up to 3 GB, and even with plenty of audio tracks, it doesn't add up...
3GB?! Wow, and here's me grumbling about an extra 80MB(!) You definitely need the 'Project Clean Up' feature more than I do!
Same here, Dan! I also find Logics project file sizes are piling up. Most of my projects are around 450MB and so I’m wondering if anything can be done…
Hah, it sounds like others need this feature more than I do! Although I always duplicate my project file before each session (for backup reasons) so the increased file sizes do start to add up...
Your tip about routing everything to a submix (in a previous message), to allow a reference track to be routed directly onto the master track (unprocessed) was very useful thanks Bob. I added a Fabfilter ProQ3 onto the reference track and another onto my submix, and can now see the two EQ responses superimposed on top of each other - perfect!
Logic Pro Mobile is missing 45-60% of its functions in comparison to Mac version.
I can freestyle a few of them:
Save
Save as <—-if only you knew how much this omission sucks
Project alternates
Groove quantize
The entire sampler
The useful part of alchemy
The ugly new half ass guis for effects and instruments
User file back up
Load, drag and drop between two projects
Flex Time/Flex Pitch
Groove tracks
Screen sets
Score
Auto save is always on, saving over the original file…hope you don’t make a mistake
Track time ruler
Autosampler
Strip silence
I can go for longer if anyone needs me to…logic is a long way from 1:1 with desktop
…add easy Comping
If I really need to cleanup a project I would export it to Mac clean it up and bring it back to iPad. I know it’s ugly but it works
Still Logic for iPad is a bless for me. I love it!
While project cleanup would be nice indeed but I have the opposite issue.
Logic Pro for iPad is a bit too eager to delete files
In Mac Logic I can access all the files used by the project easily, even those that have been removed from the time-line using the project browser.
The lack of easy export of audio-regions or samples recorded with the QuickSampler is a bit more tricky.
Here I can use WaveBox and dig into the Logic project bundle and export the files to other locations.
Sadly Files.app doesn't yet support browsing inside document bundles...
Maybe some day LogicPro for iPad will include favorite locations in the built-in browser with easy drag'n'drop export.
But despite all the WTFs Logic remains my go-to DAW on the iPad and I don't see anything changing that in the near future.
Could also be the cause of the missing audio in Sample Alchemy
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/57838/sample-alchemy-can-no-longer-find-the-samples-how-do-i-even-find-what-they-were
Have you experienced this?
Nope, that must be something prior to the 1.1 update considering the date of the original post...
Also reported yesterday https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1299065/#Comment_1299065
But could indeed be patches created before the 1.1 update. Maybe @MrSmileZ can confirm?
I should also mention that I never store Logic projects on iCloud and always use local storage and Airdrop to Mac when needed.
I've saved about 100+ various presents using all the instruments that use samples and all of them still work.
I have also deleted the all projects I used to import the presets from my desktop...
And as I'm me, I always keep my iPadOS version up to date (17.3 at the moment and before March 7 it'll likely be 17.4).
I only use local storage…Icloud sucks. Worse Apple product ever made..lcloud.
I am current iOS, I am also current 12.9 iPad Pro m2
My sample alchemy patches were made over the period of several weeks, they all worked and there is no way to bulk erase any of them so I know this didn’t occur. I am however not positive if they disappeared after the update (i suspect they did). I think I may have made all the patches before the update. I am now not eager to make more. Even though sample alchemy is an exciting instrument in Logic Pro 4 IPad, it will not be taken seriously at all. There is no real efficient way to back up user sounds to be honest, and until there is…I’m on cubasis 3.
I have also made note of no save, no save as….
This is an absolute deal breaker for me
Logic projects must be duplicated and renamed prior to working on them in order to not change them.
Not being able to save as, has to be amongst the worst things that a daw has ever offered.
If you do not duplicate a project prior to work, anything you do can and will be a consequence. There is no way to stop this.
Meaning if you alter a patch too much and don’t remember the settings, it’s gonna be a long walk to the liquor store Billy.
Anything you do that negatively affects the project is now saved whether you like it or not.
Great job Apple, you managed to create a ‘feature’ that nobody will want or need…and may throw their iPad depending on how angered they are about losing work from an autosave.
I use Logic Pro for Mac and logic for iPad using iCloud. Love it. I can open projects wherever I am without issues.
And also, importantly for me, I have a Time Machine drive at my office which backs it all up which I can use to rewind to previous projects on iPad (via the Mac) as well as in logic for Mac which can revert to previous projects natively. Considering it’s still early days for logic on the iPad I think it’s a pretty amazing start. I’ve had no issues that have stopped me in my tracks.
I’m enjoying logic on the iPad. It’s cool for a change of scenery and a way to easily use all the cool iPad only audio apps and plugins I have. I like using it 100% mobile — nothing other than headphones plugged in.
Project features such as consolidation and cleanup will make iPad only life much easier. And the other missing features such as reverting to previous projects. The Mac version has a 30 year head start.
In the meantime LP4iP works better for me as a complement to logic on the Mac. Which to be fair the entire iPad is for me. I think I’ll always be Mac first.
