A Dogs Life
If you have ever had to put a dog down you know that it’s one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do. Maybe not THE hardest but it’s up there. Creating music when bad things happen is an effective coping method for me. I am sure it is for many of you also.
So here is me getting it out of my system. Her name was Roxie and I tried to capture the various aspects of her personality. Especially the wild chaos and sheer energy to go from zero to insane in an instant. Done entirely in NS2. All the barking in there is her.
If you choose to listen, thanks.

Hey @boomer,
Sorry about your dog.
This is a really great piece of music, it reminds me of my dog crazy jumping around. RIP
The mix is so nice and clean. 👍
@ecou Thanks for listening and the kind words. Happy that I was able to convey the craziness! I think all dogs are neurotic in their own unique ways.
Wow… just wow! I had to listen to this a few times. Super tight, complex, exciting. Each part tells a story. I can tell you put a LOT of time into this! It reminds me of Romantic Warrior by Return To Forever. The attention to the smallest details are obvious. This is the stuff I aspire to. I’ve been getting lazy lately and this just inspired me to get busy again. Thanks for posting!
Sorry about the loss, mate. I hope he was way old, but still. I never had a relationship with a dog till a year and a half ago. My partner was dying and she always had whippets. Her 15 yr old died and we got a pup for the first time. All the others were rescues.
Now I get it. Bodhi was all mine after my girl stepped off the planet. He’s been an incredible comfort and joy now he’s almost two. Sapiens are a killer species. Canines are not. We’re fortunate to have them to remind us.
Great piece of music. It’s got a lot of cartoon chase but it’s real even then. The end is poignant and also a cartoon ending, in the best way.
What did you make this with and how long did it take? Thx for sharing those special moments.
Bodhi says hi, too..
Is that all programmed or played live ?
All,
To quote @Paulieworld “Wow… just wow”. I am humbled by this praise. Thank you.
@Paulieworld I do spend a lot of time on everything. Too much time. But the way I work precludes the freshness your music has and that I can’t do at all. Don’t aspire too much.
@LinearLineman I am sorry about the loss of your partner but happy that Bodhi came out of that pain. Love the goofy pics. Hi back to him. Our Roxie was a rescue dog so we don’t know exactly how old. But she was certainly old and in pain. Your observations about the cartoonish stuff in my piece is eerily spot on. I had mentioned to my wife that it was maybe too cartoonish and she didn’t know what I was talking about. You picked up on it immediately using the same word.
@ecou and @LinearLineman how did I make it?…
I did everything from inception to final mix in NS2 using mostly just the iPad. I will sometimes use a small external keyboard or wind controller to play in a basic idea quickly before I forget it. But I can do without those if needed. Most of my process is much like writing a traditional score only with a piano roll instead of staff paper. One note at a time but with the many time saving digital tools available. This piece took maybe a month once I was into it. Then a couple of weeks after that is just listening over and over and over fixing everything that bothers me. Then I play it for my wife and fix what bothers her. Then when I think I’m done I notice something else that bothers me. Pretty anal, I know.
Tremendous piece of work. Sorry for your loss but she lives in her barking contribution to your piece 👍
Very nice and professional sounding. Great tribute to your beloved dog.
