Loopy Pro version of Soma Cosmos Looper

edited February 5 in Loopy Pro

I know a few other people have asked about this either directly or indirectly - in some older threads. As far as I can see, no one has come to a definitive conclusion or template (that I've been able to find.) I've read some ideas, but to be honest, I don't understand a lot of the terminology and concepts surrounding the mixer on Loopy Pro. I'm learning, but still a long way off.

I'm hoping someone more adept than me could put together a template in Loopy Pro that would emulate the Soma Cosmos looping pedal. This is a very unique (and pricey) pedal.
The manual is here, but I'm going to put some key screenshots in here in hopes that a Loopy Pro guru (like so many of you are) might take on this.

I have a few effects that could help with achieving the functions of the Cosmos:

  • Gauss Looper
  • rymdigare
  • Tardigrain (granular Synth)
  • EOS2
  • Other Desert Cities

  • The Cosmos also has a low pass and high pass filter.

    ………….

Maybe we can help you understand the concept s you need.

What mixer terminology and concepts do you need clarified?

I didn’t have time for a thorough read but you will probably need some outside the box thinking as it seems more of a multiple delay line rather than looper. There might be ways of accomplishing it. I am not sure.

I’d start by trying to implement one aspect to see if that is doable and add capabilities from there.

  • Probably helps to add Enso and Fluss to this mix. Probably a good idea to start with the signal flow chart.
From looking at the device controls. Enso looper ticks quite a few boxes from the get go. And used in Loopy would allow for mapping widgets/follow actions etc. to Enso controls.

Sounds like you could build this pretty easily in AUM using some looper and delay apps.

Or you could just buy TTAP and open the chothi preset:

A number of demos in that thread. Note the last one, which uses two instances, transforming it from a cosmos emulator to a multiverse emulator!

That's my take too. There are lots of plugins available to put together something like this. Loopy Pro isn't high up on the list of ones that come to mind for me.

  • sure thing. to make it sound the same is not a big deal. It depends on how much control you need.
If you want a sequence of midi events happening with a single button press and have nice visual feedback on screen or midi hardware. Or after a gesture or as a follow action then loopy as a host is pretty amazing. Mapping a midi pedal to plugins in AUM can become a mess quickly when mimicking a hardware looper. And it does not hurt having a buffer that can capture the last 128 bars after the fact, for example when Enso crashes😆
Loopy is so much more than just a looper in this regard.

  • Too right, @tpj — using Loopy Pro simply as a host and not a looper is so often overlooked. Maybe the new LP marketing person will solve this! Even purely as a control surface for other hosts, it’s amazing. I’d really like the flexibility of routing you get with AUM, but I guess each product has its focus, right?

Perhaps the looping focus will always overshadow its other talents. 🤷🏻 And using another looper inside Loopy does sound kind of funny. 🤣

That's okay - you have already helped me so much! I appreciate all that you are doing in these forums.

Good advice. I guess I get overwhelmed sometimes. And the terminology is a bit of a steep learning curve for me. My brain isn't as sharp as it used to be.

Wow! Thank you so much for creating this graphic! I saved it on my phone for quick access!
I do have Enso already installed, and have played with it a bit in the past. I'm curious - do you have any ideas on how to create the "loop drift' that Cosmos is famous for? Maybe I should load two or three instances of Enso in one channel of Loopy (or AUM) and have them run in serial with different settings in each?

  • @tubespace : can you explain what loop drift is?

What are a few of the terms you aren’t familiar with. I can try to explain.

Thanks for the recommendation! I will look into TTAP - I haven't heard of this app before. BTW - I really love your "Gunkali vocal improv" you linked in that thread! Risky, tasteful, and comforting!

I wish I could articulate that. I'm not sure exactly what is going on with it. From what I can gather, it seems there are two delays that have the delay tempos going up and down and the drift control is bringing them closer and further away from syncing to each other. Maybe?
This point in this demo shows it.

Another good question -- I apologize - haven't been collecting them so far, but when I run across them again, I'll be sure to ask you. It tends to be terminology surrounding sending to and from busses and having AUv3 apps in the midst. I'll see if I can find some of those puzzling ones again.
