Rambling Scribbles (in StaffPad)

After spending some time getting used to writing on a staff with an Apple Pencil, it’s become easier to write a little faster.

Not really being sure what to start with I tried writing something for piano, and after leaving it for a week I went back to it last night.

Definitely want to say thank you to @McD and @JanKun for advice in various threads.

  • It never fails to amaze me how drawing notes in Staffpad gets rendered to sound like a human playing an instrument. Is that the default piano, the Muse Keys piano or one of the 3rd party libraries like CinePiano?

Just for fun… copy those piano notes to some strings and delete the lower notes for the violin and viola and delete the upper notes for the cello and bass. Suddenly your writing music for an orchestra which we all assume requires years of musical training but in reality is just assigning notes to musicians that did most of the work learning to interpret musical notation.

I hope you keep sharing your journey so more people might be inspired to attempt this alternative approach to music creation in the foots steps of the 18th century composers.

  • @McD It’s the default piano rendered in StaffPad and then a little reverb and some EQ added to round it out.

I’m amazed as you are, but I did write various articulations and dynamics into it, so it’s not just dots on the page.

Maybe I’ll do what you suggest and rearrange for strings and see what comes out. Even if it comes out not sounding quite right I can tweak it here and there.

I’ll keep sharing, but will hopefully be a little more structured next time.

  • Here’s a tip: from the Utility section, add a chord staff. On this new chord staff tap it on the far left and you should see a pop-up menu that has a toggle for “Auto Chord”. StaffPad will display the chords that are embedded in your existing notes. I find this to be helpful to add more notes into into a new part that will sit well with the existing notes.
It’s especially useful to add a bass line. You can add a completely new note that might show an immediate change to the displayed chord. Like putting a C in the Bass when there was an e minor will change the chord to C Major 7.

As always, let your ears be the judge of what you should keep and what you might want to try changing. And remember you can slide notes and you will hear the new note as you slide into it. Tapping a note without sliding will also make the note ring out.

  • Good tips - thank you.

The auto chord function I didn’t know about, and I’m sure that will be useful.

  • Great piece, very promising. Can't wait to hear a full orchestra in your hands!

  • Enjoyed it. Sounded very natural. Augers well for your future creations /

It is a little rambling, so I would imagine my next efforts will be a little more structured and I’ll pay more attention to good counterpoint!

Every project helps you understand StaffPad more and gives you greater control of the thousands of options available to you. In the end your musical persona emerges from all these exercises in making new sounds.
