Files app not previewing audio anymore

I use the files app a lot to preview audio files on my phone. Usually they just open right up within the files app. But, out of nowhere tonight they started opening up in Neon. So, I deleted Neon. Now they want to open up in PaulStretch (which I then deleted). Now, it’s Koala….

I didn’t change anything. How do I get it back to “normal” where it just pops up a play button and waveform overview in the files app?

Have you tried force-quitting the files app? Rebooting your phone?
If all else fails you can uninstall the files app, then re-install it. You won't lose any files, but be sure that you have your phone backed up just in case.

Thanks for the reply, @wim. That didn’t work but I’ve sort of figured out what was happening. I Airdropped an audio file to my phone and it is only showing up on iCloud Drive so, that’s where I was accessing it from to play. Everything is fine once I transfer it to my physical phone. I’ve never noticed this happening before but whatever 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • It shouldn’t matter if it’s on iCloud Drive. At least it doesn’t for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

iOS 17.3 may have changed the way the default share option is picked from the list. You could try "sharing" an audio file and pick the player you want to use. Maybe it will remember the last selection.

Edit: Hmmm, that may not help. Sharing an MP3 from the Files app does not offer "Files" as an option; only all the other apps. But when I tap on the file in Files, it invokes the local player. Still, you may have done something that caused Files to forget its default action for that file type. It could have been the AirDrop event.

  • Mine wants to open everything in Cubasis 😂 yeah Apple have a talent for breaking the most basic features of an operating system (file associations, file management, ...)

And mine defaults to BM3 and the annoying thing is the file gets moved into BM3 folder and 'renamed' LOL.
Doesn't help if I delete BM3 another app will 'hijack' the *.wav extension.

We really do need a way to set default apps for file-types...

  • Only solution I've found is to use an app like Sample Crate to preview and manage audio-files...

It actually gets MOVED and thus removed from the original location through a mere "Open"??

Everybody should get Sample Crate app - great stuff!

BM3 is weird when it 'imports' stuff if the files are already present in the BM3 file-structure...
...so the 'original' file I opened in Files.app gets imported and renamed to original-name[xxx].

I'm honestly starting to get pretty fed up with BM3, too many weird issues remain to be fixed.

Oh well, it is what it is...

@Samu, what is it into BM3 that you/we can’t do in Cubasis/Nanostudio/Logic Pro?

  • Yah mine was defaulting to BM3 (and getting moved) for ages but now works with proper iOS preview. Pretty sure it will break again though so Sample Crate for the win.

Yes, everyone should just get Sample Crate.

Tons. There is nothing like BM3’s sampler. Many samplers have some of the sampler’s features. None have all. Of particular interest to me are BM3’s ability to pitch and time shift in real-time with high quality. The ability to trigger slices within a sample without having to slice to pad.

There is other stuff about the workflow for recording patterns that is very nice, too.

It's not about "can't do". BM3 still has the most flexible sample/synthesis engine present on the iPad.
The 'Sampler' in Cubasis is a still a 'joke' and almost an insult to users who prefer a sample based work-flow.

Logic kinda works, but we still don't have access to the 'full' sampler present in the Mac version of Logic which is needed for layering samples and using things like 'legato glide' for lead sounds etc.

Logic also lacks proper export functionality (as an example there is no easy way to export an audio region or a sample recorded in QuickSampler *.wav). Import is a hassle using Files.app pop-over/slide-over instead of simple 'Locations' in the built-in browser...

With patience things can be done but the 'work arounds' really kill the flow.

But hey, we're all different and have our own ways of doing things :sunglasses:

  • Good suggestions! I’ve had Sample Crate since it came out and have never really used it. Time to bust it back out!

  • I just long press on my sample in files and hit preview. It’s an extra step but it helps my samples from opening in BM3 and I lose the file again. It would be nice if it could just sample with a long press and it would be done.

I can't stand the files app audio preview anyway. It's annoying enough that you have to go to a separate screen and back, but the real annoyance is how it applies a fade-in to the playback after the first time you play it.

On MacOS it imports the file into your iTunes music library by default. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Unless you change the default app for the file-type, wish that could be done in iOS/iPadOS as well.
I'm quite sure there's a 'defaults string' that could be run if iPadOS had a proper terminal.app...

And, great as they are, not everybody owns Cubasis/Nanostudio/Logic Pro.

It’s truly baffling to me how they manage to do it so consistently.

  • I miss System 7. Files types and creator codes! Maybe I'm romanticising — it's all a bit hazy now. I guess I don't miss resource forks.

I even miss my younger me having musical fun with all Commodore machines from 1982 to 1995 - unfortunately then I went 386 for a while before joining the Mac Community…

It’s really easy to become nostalgic and get a tear in the eye over the time flies by…

Resource forks were fun to mess with (using Resorcerer) change dialogue boxes and prank people by changing the order of app icons and buttons etc. :sunglasses:

And with the debugger installed it was easy to by-pass registration boxes and create a simple patches...

No you're right — I DO miss resource forks!
