Sequencer Sends MIDI Message On (BEFORE) Beat (or Beat Subdivision)

Hi,
I want a sequencer that syncs to the host beat, and has beat subdivisions to the 64th beat.
Rather than trigger a drum beat or sound - I want it to trigger a MIDI message of my choice.

Additionally..... I'd like to be able to add a "lead time" so it actually sends the MIDI message (of my choice) 'x' milliseconds before the beat or beat subdivision. This allows time for the MIDI message to get sent out, and time for changes to be applied: like to a plugin, a bus, or whatever I want to control - before the beat (or subdivision) or in time for the beat.

I mocked up a screen shapshot of this. The context is Loopy Pro - HOWEVER, PLEASE - on the left side where it says action buttons: Action One, Action Two, Action Three - those would be buttons to configure a MIDI Message.

PLEASE don't tell me I can do this in Mozaic. I have written a Mozaic script to do this; but it doesn't allow a lead time or beat divisions. It doesn't have a nice interface like what I mocked up.

LEAD TIME: This means when I say I want to trigger some action 'x' milliseconds before the beat, or beat division that I select. So when the beat or beat subdivision happens, the change I wanted (like a plugin enabled or disabled, a preset changed, a wet/dry mix changed, audio bus routing changed..... whatever I want that can respond to a MIDI message)::: the change has already just happened.

There's a ton of MIDI plugins out there; but is there something like this: WITH a lead time?
Bro AJ

Just Chords can send anticipated chords as an AUv3 plugin.

The program is under active development with a Discord community.

  • +1 for Just Chords. I tried these anticipated chords with iBassist and it worked fine.

@Vmusic Just Chords also dispatches CC triggers upon entering song sections. You can connect those triggers to MidiMessenger, Streambyter or Mozaic to dispatch commands to other plugins.

  • I could build that in Drambo and it would work as long as you arm the trigger while the sequencer is running.

  • @GRiker Can you kindly answer a question about just chords. [I lied, a few questions]

    • Can you make your song in just chords?
    • Can you loop a section?
    • The "chords" it sends; is it just literal MIDI note messages?

    Thank you!!

    • Can you make your song in just chords?

Yes. You can organize your song into sections, representing verses, choruses, etc.

    • Can you loop a section?

You can loop a section or the entire song.

    • The "chords" it sends; is it just literal MIDI note messages?

JC sends MIDI block chords with variable anticipation, from none to 1/8 ahead of the beat.

    Thank you!!

    👍

  • @GRiker Where do set the "lead" time, so that the chord is played ahead of the beat?

  • @GRiker by the way..... it looks uh OnSong. Have you ever used that software?

Touch the circular arrows button in the top right group of icons. Those are the AU settings, where you control looping, as well as anticipation for MIDI 1, MIDI 2, and MIDI CONTROL.

I haven’t used OnSong, but I believe Just Chords was designed to be compatible with the chordpro file format.

  • @GRiker
Thank you so much..... this is the sort of thing I'm trying to do; to change parameters (here the sends)..... on the beat, or really before the beat.

  • Try connecting Just Chords MIDI Control output to MIDI Messenger. You can set up a trigger in MIDI Messenger to send a message to another plugin.

  • @GRiker I got it to work. I made that video myself using JustChords, as you suggested.

In Loopy Pro, I fed or triggered the "SENDS" (or audio router) dial by a MIDI NOTE on and a MIDI NOTE off. I alternated between a C and F chord. The "E" note (3rd note of the C chord) triggered one of the SEND dials to 100% (on) or 0% (off), and the the "F" note no or off, triggered the other SEND dial. This type of thing is exactly what I wanted to functionally accomplish.

So again thank you!! I did send a request to the maker of one sequencer software to make a modified version of their software to send MIDI messages on certain "beats"

  • Thanks for letting me know it worked out. Just Chords continues to evolve, and the developer is quite responsive to feedback.

When a sequencer sends MIDI messages before the intended beat or subdivision, it disrupts timing and rhythm in music production. Ensure precise synchronization by adjusting quantization settings, verifying tempo alignment, and exploring latency reduction techniques. Attention to these details ensures a seamless and accurate musical performance.
