Rambling Strings (in StaffPad)
So I posted a piano piece I put together in StaffPad:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/59559/rambling-scribbles-in-staffpad
and @McD suggested separating the two piano staffs into string instruments. It didn’t sound quite right, so I broke it down into two violins, a viola, a cello, and a double bass, and reharmonized it somewhat.
Here’s the result:
I rendered it in StaffPad using the default instruments, and added some reverb and some light EQ before uploading.

The one problem with taking me advice is that I’m empowered to keep providing more advice.
The default strings have a somewhat crude attack that sounds a little unreal to me. I recommend you try drawing in “legato” curves over your phrases to see if the attacks are more organic and articulate.
If you don’t hear a difference (which means the default library doesn’t have legato samples. Then try the Muse Strings as an alternative for free. I went with Cinesamples Strings as the next step because they were on sale. Many prefer the Berlin Strings as the nest purchase… but I keep using Cinesamples for my big string projects. Spitfire is good too and the Spitfire Chamber Strings are the bomb for intimate string performances. Then I went to the solo string products and it doesn’t end. It’s all just more colors for the paint box.
I love the switch in the middle to “Pizzicato” articulations. I hope you’re having fun with all this power.
There are a few legato passages in there already, but I was surprised that they didn’t sound the way I expected them to sound. Maybe I’ll export the MIDI and see if I can get it to sound better on one of the libraries on my MacBook.
I agree that they aren’t the best strings, so I might invest in one of the IAP libraries.
Don’t forget the free Muse libraries… there are 8 of them in the store to download.
Ah, you had said that before and I forgot. Thanks for the reminder.
