Tunnels - voice and piano (Now with Video! 😂)
Yesterday, on the day of the Super Bowl in Las Vegas I read that the city has had miles of tunnels dug beneath it, to cope with the infrequent but at times devastating floods and storms. Unfortunately, these tunnels have also become home to hundreds of people, many of whom came to Vegas in the hope of finding a better life. It was a heart rending story and I spent yesterday writing a song about what I’d read.
Also, last September at the age of 63 I decided to start to learn piano. This is the first song I’ve ever written and recorded purely with piano. I’m dead chuffed because I’d never imagined I’d ever be able to play piano on one of my songs. It’s a bit rough and ready, I used Pianoteq in Logic Pro, played it in a few sections, but there was minimal midi editing involved I’m proud to say. If you listen, I thank you very much.
Tunnels
Neon lights the night sky but deep below the palace
Gloom covers danger, protection from the streets
Glitzy residency, slot machines out of earshot
Down there in the tunnels with the people time forgot
Built to save a city
Take mercy and have pity
They came here with a dream
The lure of employment and suburbia so it seemed
As evening comes, the lights blink on, high rollers settle in
Tourists crowding downtown, roulette wheels spin
A troop of drunken women search collective utopia
And pretend they didn’t notice him as he scurries home alone
Built to save a city
Take mercy and have pity
They came here with a dream
The promise of employment and suburbia so it seemed
Left down there, it’s dry tonight, to nurse his own addictions
‘It’s a blessing when it’s cold and windy’ uttered like he meant it
Quick in manner, dirt lined hands, it only took one shot
Down there where it doesn’t matter with the people time forgot
Built to save a city
Take mercy and have pity
They came here with a dream
The promise of employment and suburbia so it seemed
They promised it would save the city
But who will they feed the hungry?
Down there where there is nothing
In a labyrinth of danger beneath a world of everything

Very nice - the piano part is simple but effective, with some nice embellishments.
Your vocal sounds great, one of your best ever - I think having more space in the mix with the solo piano might be a factor here, it gives the vocal room to shine.
Thanks @richardyot coming from you that means a lot. I remember your encouraging words when I said I’d resolved to learn piano.
I think this style suits my older voice - in this case, it was just one take, sitting down at my desk, grumping at the mic in an untreated room.
Your voice and lyrics are top notch. Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen. Can’t have enough voices like that.
I agree with @richardyot after listening to your album Stories and Imagery. The piano may be just the thing to release the Kracken.
I can hear Leonard Cohen in your voice. Sad but true story. The piano supports the singing just enough so as not to detract from the message. Very well done!
We lived in Vegas for a while. I was never aware of the tunnels. It’s a good thing they were there. When it rains, which rarely happens, it’s of biblical proportions. The rain has nowhere to go and within a few minutes, there was over a foot of water on the road and I and ended up in a ditch. Two hours later, it was bone dry.
I feel for those people in the tunnels. The saddest part is that many of them choose that life. I’m starting to ramble, so… keep on playing that piano. It’s the most expressive instrument of all.
@LinearLineman wow, thank you so much - and for listening to the album. @Paulieworld thank you my friend…I hope to get better at the piano, but it’s a start.
Funny, I’ve never listened to Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen really!
Listen to Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.
Lovely piano, simple but effective, Atmospheric vocals and a memorable chorus. I enjoyed it !
Cheers Tony, I’m trying to build up the pluck up the courage to share a video of me playing it ‘live’…
I’ve made a little video of the song - mainly to prove to myself that I can get through it in one go without messing up the piano! Chuffed I managed to do this - I honestly could not have imagined this six months ago.

Nice video Bill. Good use of the split screen and a simple honest performance. Not bad for only 6 months on the piano 👍
