SFM Tutorials: Design your MIDI Controllers with Midi Designer Pro X

Design your Midi Controller, MIDI Designer Pro X - Tutorial: [CONTROL ALL YOUR GEARS]

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/midi-designer-pro-x/id492291712

Control MIDI-enabled software and gear on iPhone, iPad, Mac with a pro-grade controller - vast library, robust performance, full customization.

From the developer:

“MIDI Designer Pro X (MDPx) is the culmination of over a decade of continuous improvements. In 2012, we launched MIDI Designer Pro, which we relaunched in 2016 as MIDI Designer Pro 2. MDP2 was the first and only professional-grade MIDI controller built natively for ios, earning widespread critical acclaim. Since launch, we have released over 80 updates, greatly expanding features and functionality. Our library of user-created content now covers over 300 MIDI targets covering a vast array of music-making gear and software. In 2024, we take a significant leap forward with MDPx. This release elevates the user experience to new heights on iPad and Mac -- including a new, expressive theme called "Spaceship" -- while advancing usability massively for iPhone users. A new subscription model - Premium - allows even more users to use the App in their music-making and discover MIDI Designer for themselves.”

  • Thanks for this, I will check it out. I do enjoy your teaching style.

I bought this app a few years ago to open up the UNO synth, the little one. I got some mileage out of it with that. I then got a Kawai K4 and after I saw the layouts for the K3 and K5 I approached the guy who had built them to ask whether he'd be interested in making one for the K4? He was interested and we spoke a couple of times about the process, which wasnt short or simple.

@wim asked in another thread about why people use glass to control hardware? I thought it was a great question. I'm a visual learner so a layout simplifies the pathways from oscillator to output.

  • Errr, I bought this app and the IAPs for £28 18 months ago and now they've gone subscription. So when I opened the app I got a message to say my subscription expires in one year - WTF?

I'm not anti-subscription, but the idea that I would be happy to buy an app as a one-time purchase and then lose access to that app when it goes subscription is nuts. Make a new app for the subs and keep the legacy version for previous customers. This is just going to alienate everyone who ever supported the app in the past.

Yeah fuck them for this move. I'll remove them from the MIDI Thread I've started as there are way better options anyways.

Yeah I'll probably switch to Surface Builder. It sucks having to rebuild my control surfaces though.

This move from the dev just seems to be such as slap in the face for existing users. To take away functionality that has already been paid for is a really disrespectful move.

I have, but no reply yet. I will update if they get back to me.

Everyone affected should contact them. And follow up if the answer isn’t satisfactory. At least one developer I know, grandfathered in all the old users to be exempt from the subscription.

  • I guess the will just say that you shouldnt update and keep the old version. Im in the same boat, updated and found out its Subskription now, was pissed as well. Cant even download the old version with imazing

I contacted them this morning, but haven't heard back. According to their forum users have to "earn" the lifetime subscription. I'm not holding my breath, but if they stiff me I will be leaving a negative review on the App Store.

While they might say that, if they hear from enough users that inadvertently updated not knowing the penalty, they may re-think the decision…unless their user base is so small that users have no clout .

If the user base is small, and I suspect that it is, all the more reason to treat them well. If you are operating in a niche market every customer is valuable. Alienating all of your previous customers is a one-way ticket to oblivion.

  • I'm usually very sympathetic to devs, and I understand the difficulties of operating in the niche music app market. I don't object to subscriptions either, I think that for some apps they are justified. But this? No way. It feels like total contempt for customers, and it deserves to fail.

I‘ll try. Lets hope there will be another solution

  • The dev got back to me, as expected it's "tough luck".

  • I would suggest anyone who has been affected by this should leave a negative review on the App Store. Unfortunately this is usually the only way to get devs to address these kinds of issues.

Karmically, I agree. And, in my opinion what they did was ethically unsound. From pure economics, sadly, if the affected users are so few in comparison to what they hope to achieve, the math doesn't dictate that they will suffer economically from what was, in my opinion, a really bad move. They may be planning on sustaining themselves either from the hardcore users in their existing base plus picking up a handfull of new user. They clearly don't care about losing a considerable portion of their old user base.

As you said, they should have released the new version as a new app so that it didn't affect owners of the legacy version.

ADDENDUM FEB 20: the developer has changed the policy. MDP 2.0 owners will not need to purchase a subscription to access the features in-place when they purchased it.
