Avoiding the wolf

A lovely 4 bar motif popped out of Piano Motifs (many thanks @azul3D_Apps ), so here it is repeated 4 times playing Ravenscroft 275 and Roli Noise Oceans Lament with me providing the SWAM Cello via GeoShred.

btw… A wolf" is an undesirable phenomenon that occurs in some bowed-string instruments, most famously in the cello. It happens when the pitch of the played note is close to a particularly strong natural resonant frequency of the body of the musical instrument.
You can fit Cellos with a Wolf Tone Eliminator hence the title of the piece.

  • Some lovely cello lines there, and the music underlying chord progression really supports it well.

Oddly, there were points at which I kept thinking I was listening to a sax line - it almost seems like it’s half cello/half tenor sax.

  • I listened first and then watched the video too. I have to agree with @michael_m , there are some moments where the bowed sounds are quite similar to a saxophone. Really enjoyed listening to this one.

  • I’m getting a very reedy tone from this Cello preset… like a tenor sax or english horn. Weird. The SWAM models are always a bit weird for me.

But nothing can diminish the quality of your work for me. Lovely solo work and a nice Piano Motifs loop that repeats 8 times for me if it’s 4 bars long. Maybe it repeats 4 times and it’s 8 bars long. Anything to get to 128 beats.

  • Man, this sounds so well done and pleasing and relaxing. :) A very beautiful piece. I wish I could be more objective and find something to critique, but unless there's an obvious glaring issue, I most likely won't notice any imperfections. I guess if you made any "mistakes", they aren't noticeable to me.

Okay, enough of me trying to sound intelligent. 😂

  • Thanks very much @michael_m , @MadeofWax , @McD and @jwmmakerofmusic .
Strange about the sound, perhaps it was the preset I was using as below? It was only going through a bit of reverb so can’t be that.
I’m just going off what Piano Motifs was saying @McD , again as below ? Melody Note Frequency was set to 100%

  • Lovely piece @GeoTony

Funny how it’s about the Wolf tone, but the comments suggest avoiding the “sax, or reed tone”.

I do recall posting a piece, a ways back, that @McD commented on the “sax line” and I was like “uhmmm McD, that’s a Cello”. So this isn’t the first case of this “phenomenon”.

Btw I’ve read that one can tame the “wolf” by squeezing the cello with one’s knees. There’s also the “wolf eliminator” devices that can be purchased.

  • @GeoTony, very nice piece. The solo is so soothing and relaxing.

  • Thanks @azul3D_Apps and @Edward_Alexander .
I missed the irony Edward of me referring to the wolf tone of the Cello and then having people say that the Cello on the track didn’t sound like a Cello 🤨 Perhaps there’s something about the instruments range/ resonances that makes them similar ?
I knew about the eliminator but not about the knee squeezing. Playing the Cello must be quite a workout 🏋️

  • Just beautiful.

It doesn’t detract from the track at all, it just sounds more like a reed instrument than a stringed one.

Definitely sounds like quite a workout if you’re squeezing your knees tight while giving your arm a workout.

  • I’ve experienced the sax/string similarity many times in my own stuff. You just can’t deny these sounds do not originate from real instruments. In my own thinking I try to dissociate from a perfectionist desire to be playing a real instrument without putting in the work required to master one. I’d rather stand outside the authenticity difficulty if I can.

A sweet track, Tony. You’re good at this.

  • 🙏 @Svetlovska , @michael_m and @LinearLineman .
You are of course right Mike, a few weeks on an app will always be a poor substitute for years on a real instrument.
Still fun though which is what matters 😊

  • @GeoTony maybe you misunderstood. The artificiality can be the best if the context is right. It’s just when we compare them to what they’re “meant” to imitate. If we forget about that, there is no limitation. Have a great weekend, bro.

  • No I understood Mike ( @LinearLineman ), I just phrased my response badly… same to you !

  • Very nice. That SWAM thing sounds great :-)

Very, very pretty. It’s all blended nice. I’ve never heard of a wolf tone before. Interesting. Man that SWAM intrument sounds great. Very enjoyable.

Sounds nice although, my surname means wolf and now I'm sad about being avoided 😉😂
