Following footsteps in the snow (Notion Mobile)
Back in January 2023, @GeoTony charmed us with Footsteps in the snow:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/53908/footsteps-in-the-snow
I decided to follow them to see where they go...
Creative notes
I started by researching how to convey 'cold' musically (tremolo, thin high short tones, no warm fuzzy stuff), and then determined that I wanted the piece to take the listener on a mildly adventurous journey (although not through a cliched Hollywood adventure theme).
Having never orchestrated anything before, and having not even written anything using notation, I tried to learn about the roles of various instruments in the orchestra and how to write for them. Hopefully it's a passable first attempt.
Structurally, you'll hear all of the original piece, split into the 'A' and 'B' sections in the first 1:20, then after a diversion, moving through various keys and themes, it rejoins the original melody at 5:00.
I deliberately saved the French horn and some warmer strings for the end, feeling it was nice to come in from the cold at journey's end.
Production notes
All composition was done in Notion Mobile, with all instruments coming from Notion Mobile too.
I soloed each track and exported as a centrally panned, dry (no reverb) stem, and loaded them into Cubasis.
There I put panning on, using a reversed orchestral layout.
Being a piano player, I always think low sounds should come from the left, not the right :-)
The basses still sounded wrong so I placed them closer to the center.
Volume automation was next, as I felt a little dissatisfied with using dynamic notation on the score as a sole input for volume. It's not perfect, and still no match for a real orchestra, but Notion Mobile helped by Cubasis did ok here I think.
I then used Thafknar for a convolution reverb, and for this performance you are sitting in seat D22 in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, in York, England.
My mastering process was simply to apply a bit of eq to remove low end rumble, use smoov compressor to remove some spikes, then youlean LM lite as usual for Lufs compliance.
Comments
What can I say other than thank you very much for elevating my humble piece into something quite beautiful 🙏
To say that it’s your first attempt at orchestration and notation I’m deeply impressed 😊
I’ll be listening to it again later on some better speakers…
Thanks @GeoTony, glad you enjoyed it. It was a complete departure for me to do this, but I learned loads from YouTube on orchestration and I like the idea of actually seeing notes and phrases rather than little coloured lines. Back in AUM now wondering which project to progress next :-)
