sqsl Lottery
Probability MIDI sequencer
Michal Macura
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sqsl-lottery/id6478176905
sqsl Lottery is a "sequential weighted probability matrix MIDI note sequencer".
there are 5 parameters used to generate notes: KEY (semitone), OCT (octave), VEL (velocity), TIME (including mutes) and CH (MIDI channel). For every parameter there is a matrix where columns represent value and “buttons” in column represent possible destination values. Current value is indicated by colored-highlighted column background. Value that will follow (after current value) will be selected from activated destinations/buttons in the current colum.
For example: for KEY/semitone parameter (C, C#, D, D#…), there are 12 + 1 columns, each containing 12 buttons. The first column defines “what will happen after C note is played”. If button E and F is activated in the first column, after C note, sequence will progress to note E or F. Each button/key has its probability “strength” = likeness that it will be the selected destination. Probability strength is indicated by brightness and is set by tapping on button. The actual strength value is decided randomly when tapped and can be continuously changed by PHASE touch strip. PHASE affects all probabilities in the current matrix so PHASE changes result in new probability routes.
In case there are no destination selected in the current column (all buttons have probability 0), sequence will advance to OFF-labelled column on the left (and no note will be played). If there is only one button activated (set to have probability higher that 0), it will be the chosen destination regardless of its value. Dot is drawn in the middle of the button if its probability value is higher than 0 (to differentiate 0 from low value).
There are 5 voices, each can produce one note at a time. Voices share probability settings of KEY, OCT, VEL, TIME and CH parameters. Voices have separate direct control for clock density, clock division, swing, gate length, octave offset, MIDI channel offset and semitone transposition.
Main parameters (key, octave, velocity, time, channel) can be “remapped” - for example by default, first column of key matrix represents C value but it can be mapped to any other semitone. This allows changing the resulting note patterns without necessity to rearrange the probability matrix.
There is global clock rate control that affects the main tempo and each voice has its clock division, clock density, swing and gate length settings. There are 8 pages each with 96 slots for storing current state (presets).
Notes:
sqsl Lottery is a standalone app sending out only MIDI notes.
sqsl Lottery it does not produce sounds/audio on its own.

As usual, no syncing ability.
A standalone app...tssss...No man is an island my friends...
Very cool. Ignore the complainers, they will complain ad infinitum
Add me to the ‘complainers’ list
Still not absolutely sure how I'm doing it but I'm creating something a little more musical with this than his other apps.
I always find this dev’s apps interesting. Yes, I wish they were AUv3, had Ableton Link etc, but at least he is doing something different and they are inspiring. I don’t have time to do a spoken walkthrough, but here is a short 2 min demo, with some info, links etc in the pinned YT comment.
I have giveaways on Patreon / YT / Insta / Twitter for 5 ppl to win any app by this dev - see the pinned comment on the YT vid for details. Best chances to win are on Patreon.
Quite nice!
Thnx! I think the demo I did for Insta is nicer - this dev’s apps always take a while of experimenting with before you start to get good at using them, they’re really like instruments. After a few days or weeks of playing around with them you could end up doing some REALLY cool stuff. Playing around with timing probabilities in particular can be super interesting - or it can be a shambles if you don’t (yet?) know what you’re doing loool
Theres a fine line between experimental, ambient, chaos, and just garbage, and working on something longer can just make it worse.
Yes it can, but not necessarily. My main point is that these are like instruments and benefit from the user having familiarity and knowing what they're doing. That takes knowledge but also experience. Luckily, they're fun to play with, so building up a bit of experience is enjoyable 🔥
Generative in that pressing a key results in a note, vs modifying a parameter in probability equation results in an expected change to a sequence sometimes 🔥
Done. (I call it the mute function.)
If more devs focused on things that were different and inspiring, rather than making sure they ticked the boxes of the loudest "supporters," I think the problem of declining creativity in this area might have a chance of being reversed.
Borderlands would be shot down on its day of release today by the connectivity-or-die crew, most of whom have not produced anything of their own to withstand the criticism of others.
I agree! Don't get me wrong - and I'm sure we're probably on the same page here - I would prefer if these sequencers were AUv3. But they are genuinely far more interesting than most of the AUv3s being released today. Ergo... I'm quite happy to let the AUv3 thing slide and enjoy them as they are. More devs should be making interesting apps like these that turn the touchscreen into an interesting surface for performing on in real time - this is basically the main strength of the iPad, after all!
I get what you’re saying but to be fair, Borderlands Granular came out over a decade ago… I think you’re maybe being a little defensive about this. To release a midi sequencer for the iPad that isn’t AUv3 today is just drastically limiting who is going to get to play with your creation. It’s as simple as that.
Every one of this developer’s releases looks right up my street. Really inventive sequencers. But I haven’t purchased a single one of them. And I buy everything lol… But there’s no way I’m spending money on something I can’t easily use in my DAW anymore so that’s the cutoff for me. No biggie.
I’ve got no problem with an app not being AUV3. Some of my all time favorites aren’t. Borderlands, Samplr, Thumb/Drumjam, Launchpad and Blocs Wave, etc.
But a sequencer with no connectivity and no sync is a hard sell outside of the drone app he has (which I own and really enjoy). I can see the value if you’re also using hardware or using it to sequence one app for a live performance or something.
Also the apps I mentioned above can be used on their own in a more complete way (and also are at least IAA) but for me personally, a sequencer is one of those things that really needs some kind of connectivity to work on iOS in a way a lot of us would find useful.
The dev has a lot of interesting ideas and implements them well. Just hope maybe he’ll come around to the idea of AUV3 eventually.
Oh my, you’ve convinced me. I now prefer uninteractive to the point i dont even want midi. Just like noises and colors now. Or maybe just a empty app that shows a non color, or doesnt even open.
A quick mention that I will have a 40 min spoken walkthrough on this, very detailed, coming up on my YouTube channel later, probably an hour or two from now. I think it will be very useful for anyone interested in this app or who has it but didn't have time to learn how to use it yet. Peace! Gav
Borderlands came out a decade ago? Respectfully, I'm not sure how that's relevant. My point is it's a great app, and still is great, and if someone put it out today, there would inevitably be the tedious chorus of "no AUV3" connectivity, therefore not fit for purpose" by people who likely knew nothing else about it, and so have nothing else to say about it.
It's like if this were a guitar forum, and every time someone posted about a Martin guitar, people would feel like they are adding to the discourse by just jumping into the thread and saying "not electric, don't want it. won't support that developer. " What did the kids used to say? cool story, bro.
I’m thinking about this from the developer’s view. When Borderlands was released, IAA wasn’t deprecated and AUv3 wasn’t the de facto music production app format (unless your app is a DAW that hosts other apps). For a developer to choose not to develop a music app today in 2024 in the standard AUv3 format just means they are drastically limiting their audience. That’s too bad. It just means their app could have the potential to reach many more musicians and producers. I don’t know anything about guitars though…
I'm pretty sure the devs target audience are hardware users in a live environment and I admire his resistance to incorporate AUv3 - he's following his own path and I applaud him for that...
Ah, that explains things a bit. I don’t have hardware and I don’t play live so all good.
