Just the other day I saw some news of a fun credit card sized midi controller. Can’t remember where it was, maybe hacker news or CDM but I can check later
That sounds fun indeed.
Launchpad Mini.
There are several editions with different functionality.
I'm talking like half the size of those.
.
never used it, but this is tiny:

buttons not pads though
I was just looking at those Roland airas (tweak synth etc.) can't find anything definitive about whether they can be used as midi controllers via usb but if they can that would be a sweet little controller with the bonus of being a synth.
I sometimes use my Arturia MicroFreak as controller. That is probably much bigger than what you want, but the freak even has a setting that allows you to disconnect the synth from the controls so they can be used separately.
Those things look great fun but I'm determined to keep my setup minimal after a few years down the modular/GAS rabbit hole...
.
I fully understand. One of the reasons to use the MicroFreak as controller is actually to have a fairly small setup - specially for jams: The MicroFreak with a G1ON Zoom effects pedal on one side, and then the iPad connected to the G1ON's mix input. And everything powered / connected via USB.
Very expensive & far more than a controller , but it fulfills the stated requirements..
ZOIA

If pads really just means buttons , the Faderfox EC4 encoders also function as push buttons - with 16 (x16) free encoders & screen thrown in .

Oh yeah I had the other faderfox with the crossfader on it and loved it but they are so expensive.
I use MidiDesigner template on old iphone for DAW control ( TouchOsc also possible)

Hadn't thought of using my phone! Will explore.
You even get TouchOSC for Android. So if you have an old Android tablet hanging around, then that can still make a good controller for DAWs, synths or plug in parameters. Using it as a MIDI keyboard or other input device for live playing can be problematic because of the higher latency.
yes, came back to mention TouchOsc may be better choice as MidiDesigner seems to have gone subscription
I believe simple stuff like this can be accomplished with the free features.
NOISE MACHINE (NMSVE)
Flic 2
AirTurn Digit III
Zoia is outstanding!
True problem solver. And fun.
Forcing me to learn. Combined with an
Hotone foot pedal, many midi possibilities.
And synth!
And then there’s the FX.
Only wish I’d of tried one sooner.
Esi / Artesia Xjam isn't that big, made in the style of the Xkey midi keyboards. 1 CD case tall and 1.5 cases wide more or less.
You can find used Roli Lightpad Blocks online (I suggest looking for the newer "M" version).
Regarding the "This.Is.Noise" suggestion, be aware that you can't configure anything on it. For example, the buttons can't be set to toggle mode (latch on/off).
Surface Builder is another app for the iPhone / iPad that allows you to build a custom controller.
Thanks all for the mention. To clarify:
Read more on the one-pager. Free for everybody on with an iPhone, iPad or Apple Silicon Mac.
Thanks and sorry to butt in.

This looks nice. Any chance for different presets? So there is a possibility to have more than 8 encoders and 8 8 knobs?
I have one. It does not store multiple presets (but you can edit everything by connecting to an iPad or computer).
If you're looking at the phone route, check out Tonality

I bought this a while back on sale but haven't even looked at it yet, had no idea it did this kind of thing.
