I Am One (iM1)
I haven’t come up with anything much lately. So, I just decided to force it. Mom used to say “God helps him who helps himself”. I treated this much like a software project. A program with 8 subroutines. First, I picked a key, Em. No particular reason. Then I picked a tempo, 80bpm. Same reason. It consists of 8 sections, 8 bars each, with one repeat at the end. This would result in a piece roughly 3 and a half minutes in length, with a fade out. I decided to use Korg iM1 throughout. It has a large library of usable, musical sounds. I played an M1 in a band years ago and I have a soft spot in my heart for it. I used Piano Motifs and the MIDI editor to create the 8 parts. Once I had a basic structure I started filling in with some audio samples that I used in a few previous projects. That’s about it. Straight assembly line music. Sometimes you just have to force it.

Doesn’t sound forced. I guess that’s due to your extraordinary ear. You have a knack for hearing things that fit well together that makes your music special.
I think my brother had an M1. I’ll have to ask him when he calls tomorrow. It’s a standing Sunday thing. We catch up, talk about life.
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Hi Mac, thanks for listening. We are doing fine. Thanks for asking. Same to you and yours. I was actually the bass player in the band, but I played keys when John sang duets with Vicky. We were pretty big on the Ukrainian scene in Chicago. It was a thing. They went on to become Vesely Chasy, featured in the My Life wedding scene with Michael Keaton. Great music if you like that sort of thing. I did. I like polkas.

Do you wanna do another collaboration sometime?
Now do another! Also, maybe set a goal. I’m aiming for 1000 tracks and 100 albums. Should get there sometime in the next 18 months, maybe.
Whatever the process, all that matters is that it sounds really great. I really love it. The guitar part is gorgeous.
Had an M1 too when it came out, then the 01w/fd , but the Triton was a terrible disappointment and I gave up on Korg.
I still have my 01w/fd. It’s packed away in the closet with everything else. I really loved it. I did something about 25 years ago that used only that. The “DAW” was a program called Texture, written by Roger Powell. He was the keyboard player for Todd Rundgren. It was DOS based and everything was done with keyboard commands. Ctrl-this, Alt-that, etc. I can’t imagine it using nowadays!
I posted it a while ago. I would like your thoughts. I’ll bump it up in a while. I think it might bring back some nice memories.
Hey Paul,
I would love to do another collaboration when I finish my latest project. I had the crazy idea it would be fun to make a lyric video where the words appear on screen in time with the latest song I wrote ( yes, singing. Get your best dog howling imitation on standby)
Turns out it's not fun. At all. It's actually quite tedious. But I made some good progress over this past weekend and I'm hoping if all goes well I'll have something to share by the end of this coming weekend.
If you have some ideas about what you'd like to do, throw 'em my way. If you want some ideas I'll put on my thinking cap.
Have a great week.
@MadeofWax Looking forward to your next project! I understand about the process being tedious sometimes. I've been going through that, lately. On the bright side, I was able to sit outside yesterday and look out over the yard while I played with my iPad. That always helps. I will message you in a week or two and we can kick around some new ideas. Hope you're feeling well!
Welcome back. Forcing it just means you did not feel like doing it. Nothing to do with what you end up with. You come through no matter what your state of mind, or genre, or how hard or easy it is. You can’t help it. This is well structured with the wonderful juxtapositions of ideas that you are so good at. That the ideas are realized from an M1 just changes the color a bit. Looking at your subsequent recent output volume, which I have yet to listen to, it appears whatever was in your way before is gone. Wonderful stuff.
Thanks @boomer! I always enjoy doing it, but sometimes I’m not satisfied with the result. I have about a dozen that I might come back to later. I think if I used a keyboard or guitar for input, it might be a little easier. The thing is, I always seem to write the same thing over and over. Using just an iPad and stylus along with tools like Piano Motifs seems to get me thinking outside of my self-imposed box. Mom would probably roll her eyes at the thought. After all those years of piano lessons! Oh well, I don’t have any illusions of live gigging at this point in life, so posting on SoundCloud and the forum are the next best things.
I hope you are working on something new. I am always amazed at your creations. The talent and attention to detail really shine. Looking forward to your next one. Have a wonderful day!
Doesn’t sound forced at all to me either. I like it. I think the iM1 sounds are very nice too. Sometimes when I don’t have anything in my mind to make, I will just start exploring the sounds and one may all the sudden inspire an idea.
Glad to hear another work of yours! I’d love to hear some of your older korg things. I really miss my 01w and t3.
Great minds think alike! Just kidding. I do the same thing all the time. I still have my 01/w. It’s in the closet. Maybe someday I’ll dig it out and fire it up. It had some great sounds. I just bumped up a track that I did about 25 years ago for another forum member who also had an 01/w. It’s called Iceland and it’s on the next page, if you get a moment to check it out. I won’t bump it now, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for listening!
Woah! Iceland is a great track, one of the best purely 01w compositions I’ve heard. I’ll have to analyze the chords, I like’em. I can hear a few of my favorite 01w sounds in there, but there’s a few that are new to my ears. I like that little sweep sound. Nice arrangement, I’ll have to go get my good headphones and play it a few more times. Sure miss that ‘FreshAir’ patch, I think it was called.
Thank you so much @Dav. Back in “the day” I was a player. I am so glad that someone is actually interested in hearing my old stuff!
Here is a fun one that used the 01/w, and featured a killer guitar player named Tony Iovino. Everything was recorded on tape and I did the best I could to improve the sound quality.
Here’s another, written by my buddy Curt. I transferred his MIDI to the 01/w, added a few bits of my own, and dubbed Tony on guitar. Thanks for putting up with my old school nonsense!
Thanks for listening. Have a good one, bro!
Oh yes, those are fabulous. I’ve heard them when you posted them a year or so ago. That post got me to start remastering some of my old 01/w stuff on iPad. Did ya’ll make albums like this back then? Some great musicianship there.
Thank you! Back then, making an album was a big, expensive undertaking. The best we could do was to mixdown to high quality cassettes. We couldn't afford a good 2-track for mixdowns. My friend still has the 4-track tapes, but I think they would probably fall apart if we tried to play them. I ended up taking some cassettes into a commercial studio to make a DAT tape. I sent that to a company that made CDs from it. At the time, CD burning wasn't as ubiquitous as it is now! The engineer offered to sweeten up the sound, but that would have cost money. I don't think people realize how good they have it these days! An iPad Pro can do almost anything you would have paid $150/hour for in a commercial studio. With better results, too.
Good luck with your restoration projects. I would love to hear them. If they are anything like the other tracks you have posted, I know they will be absolutely killer! Have a good one.
Setting arbitrary constraints and then coming up with something so listenable isn’t easy to do… but you pulled it off nicely… next please 👍
