A few recent Drambo releases

Just wanted to drop a line here letting everyone know about a few recent patch releases for Drambo.

This is the general-purpose multi-effects pedal that I built for the Music Easel Sim, released as a stand-alone project.

It combines convoluted reverb, shimmer/pitch-shift, dual delay and fuzz/distortion into a single compact-ish unit. As you download it, it’s configured as a shimmer reverb.

This contains a rebuild of the Buchla Music Easel simulator into more standard Drambo components. It also has some early work I’ve started expanding into modules inspired by the Buchla 200.

    Very nice work, having great fun dissecting your patches, specially interested how you are doing the function gen, since I dabbled in this as well with varying results. But I’m seeing some tricks I never thought of, so I look forward to explore in more depth.
    For some reason my iphone gets real hot after a few minutes, not sure why (probably cause it’s a SE 1st gen). I’ll have to check when I’m on the ipad.
    Anyway thanks a lot for sharing and keep up the good work!

  • The function generator was deceptively challenging. There’s a lot of Rube Goldberg stuff going on in there, particularly around the sustain.

    I have to confess I do not understand the Rube Goldberg reference, wasn’t he like a painter or something? I must be missing something obvious, care to shed some light?

  • And west coast stuff, where it relies on feedback, is not simple in drambo because of the design choice of feedforward-only (which I think was genious).
    Sure we have the feedback modules, but I sense they make complex projects like yours more unstable (well at least mine, so it might be user error).
    The end of cycles feedback backwards to retrigger something are the challenge. Case in point krell-patches, that although I did a few I’m really happy with, sometimes all those gates flying around escape my comprehension (of my own designs).
    I switched to regular envelope mod (not “manually” retriggered but using the module’s built in cycle function).
    For Krell patches that works as you can easily build a varying random looping envelope.
    But there are other designs where the feedback retrigger might bring other (or more interesting results), albeit at the cost of a little delay

    Apologies. Rube Goldberg was an inventor/artist who designed intentionally complicated machines that barely worked. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine

    The linear, one-way signal chain in Drambo was less of an issue in building the Music Easel, but it is a major headache as I dig into the 200, and I’ll admit that I might research other platforms before I get too far down the road on that build. I know it’s unlikely, but I wish Drambo had an option to turn on an advanced mode that would allow freely patching feedback signals without having to use those modules. Or maybe incorporate a separate patch panel module like Apematrix.

    Oh that’s interesting, I didn’t know about it, I’ll give it a read.
    As for sample feedback I don’t think it will even be possible since it would be like replacing the foundations of a building once it’s built (or take the flower out of a baked cake 😂)
    Of course you know the delay introduced is a buffer size, so if your device can handle it run at low latency, but I don’t think it’s worth it, for CV signals it’s negligible, and even for things like cross modulated oscillators it manages the sound. Sure, it’s not instant but for me it doesn’t make any difference in terms of sounds I can make (does it, for anyone? He who can tell the difference cast the first stone)

    Feedback with low latency for level dsp is pretty cpu-intensive. Audulus allows it but it comes at a cpu cost.

    It’s always a trade off. The way I see it Drambo takes the choice of maximizing fun by sparing some cpu. Audulus I haven’t followed since v2, it’s a brilliant and beautiful piece of software, but I don’t even fully understand drambo, I don’t have the stamina to keep up with miRack either
