Setup for school theater show incorporating ios

Hi everyone, I just finished doing a show for a high school in the area yesterday and I thought the tech setup might be of interest to some here. I wasn’t sure which category this should go in, so if it should be in a different category feel free to change it.

The setup involved:

-Behringer X32 (already installed at the school

-2020 MBP Running Qlab 5 (free version)and amazon music HD for preshow/intermission/post show playlist

-stage right stereo direct box with 1/8” to rca cable to connect to x32

-2012 MBP Running Theatremix software and x32 Edit (on other desktop-not seen). X32 Edit was not actively used during the show but running just in case the need arose
-Ipad 9 generation running forscore for script. Goodnotes was used to mark up the script prior to export to forScore

-2011 Mac Mini with 10"portable monitor running reaper for multitracking. This was used to allow the students to practice mixing any scenes that they felt needed extra practice.

-Ipad mini-inherited from my daughter -running mixing station pro (current version still supports the OS at which this iPad is able to run)

-X-touch extender connected to iPad mini by camera connection kit to connect to mixing station and charge ipad. This allows the faders to wirelessly control the x32, which is helpful for my Midas m32c setup in which the unit will not always be located at the FOH position. My Midas setup also includes an x-touch running with the extender into the same iPad mini so that I have 16 physical faders available.

-TP link router to interface all devices with the school's X32

It all worked together flawlessly and I am happy I was able to find uses for older apple tech. A big thank you to the developers of the apps/ programs that are involved for enabling this to be true.

I was happy to be able to teach 2 students, neither of whom had ever done sound before, to mix line by line (or an approximation of it that got better as the week progressed). They did really well!

I was also able to show them how to program the console, and most importantly, set gain structure. With 14 wireless headsets and one wireless handheld, there were only 2 quick issues with feedback during the whole week when a channel was pushed beyond its limits, and this was quickly and easily corrected with a very slight decrease on the fader. It was good for the students to learn how to go up to the limits! The best part? Each one is a sophomore in high school and my partner and I were already booked for next year’s show at this school, so I look forward to seeing their continued progress.

Hopefully this was of interest to some people here.

  • Nice.
Great to hear that you are booked for next years show 😊.

    How about light?
Was that operated from an IOS devise also?

Thanks, I’m always happy when my work serves someone well.

I am not a lighting person (at all!), so I don’t know what they did, I’m sorry. I do sound at a church in NYC as well, and the video guy now controls lights via iOS, but I’m not sure what he is using.

I know lighting cues can be controlled by QLab, which can be controlled by theatremix, and I do know that lights can be run from iOS, I just don’t have the first clue when it comes to lights besides if they are on or off as I’m not very good with visuals.
