DT770 250ohm works PERFECT with iPad Pro M1

Despite some of the (many) warnings I read all over the web to NOT buy the 250ohm version if you want to use these on the mobiles, I am running the 250ohm version without ANY trouble just using the Apple dongle on my iPad Pro M1. I don’t know at what kind of volumes people listen or produce music, but I am now listening and producing at maybe 35/40% volume, a pretty relaxed volume, maybe 50/70% to crank things up for deeper listening, but I just don’t want to know how loud these things will sound at max 100%. Seriously, it just works perfectly unless you are looking at unhealthy copious amounts of volume. It works, and it sounds great.

One note, I have to see if the higher volume settings will drain the iPad faster. Will keep an eye on this and report.

  • Good catch, yeah the audiophile headphone enthusiasts crowds like to overprovision and exaggerate, basically like the PC enthusiasts telling people to not buy Macs because of lower specs and less Jiggahurtz.

How are you liking them vs. the newer 700x?

MUCH better than the DT700 Pro X, which I find more muffled sounding, lacking a bit of detail and a much smaller soundstage ‘in your face sound’. DT770 is fantastic.

Great to hear after following your other thread. The DT770 Pro are also the top recommendation from Stimming in an older video (towards the end) about the most bang for the buck when it comes to hardware.

If you like them and want something portable for everyday listening on the go you could check out the Sennheiser IE100Pro with the Bluetooth receiver bundle (also has a cable). I own them and they're great, just lack some sub bass.

Stimming mentioned the IE40Pro as an alternative which is the predecessor and has the same drivers. I can simulate a IE40 in Morphit and it sounds exactly the same as with Morphit removed.

the IE100Pro also has the advantage over the IE40 that it can be upgraded to the more expensive IE400Pro (has more sub bass) which stimming is using himself, as the bluetooth receiver is also compatible.

I see that there is a 80 Ohm version of the DT770 too, which could be a compromise between 32 and 250.

Would go for this, but so far I always preferred open not closed over-ear headsets (like my HD590).

Is there a comparable open version?

DT990 Pro is fully open, DT880 Pro is semi open.

  • Yeah I run Sennheiser HD650s straight from the iPad with the Apple dongle no problem.

  • Just an interesting follow up, at the end of April there will be an updated ‘limited edition’ DT770 Pro X which has the same STELLAR.45 driver as the DT700, optimized for 48ohm. It will probably sell for €200.

  • Interesting. My old 9.7” iPad Pro couldn’t drive the 80 ohm DT770’s enough.

Looks like it’s the dongle that can drive high impedance cans.

  • I like 32ohm headphones for listening to commercial music or audio, but not for making music. I much prefer harder to drive headphones for recording music or for playing guitar amp sims because they don’t fall apart and can handle the raw wallop.

  • Works on iPhone 12 as well, but volume level is more limited than the iPad Pro.
iPad 5th generation (2017) works, but lower volume level like iPhone 12.

  • Yeah, my DT-990 250ohm was loud enough on all my devices.

  • So the real question now is, how much more battery will it drain at a given dB setting (I have hardware dB meter) compared to my Audio Technica M30x 47ohm / Sensitivity 96dB (same as DT770). If it drains to fast I’ll wait for the new limited edition DT770 Pro X 48ohm version.
Will do a test with this soon.

Compared my DT-990 250ohm on iPad Pro M1 (Apple dongle) and iPhone SE 2016 (headphone out) and volume is equal.

Unfortunately I don’t like using them longer than 30 mins nowadays, my ears get hot and irritated.
Anyone found that replacing pads made them comfortable again? Mines are old and a bit flat.

Did you try the leather pads from the DT770 32ohms? Don’t know if it will make a difference. I believe they form a better seal, but might(?) introduce some more bass. https://www.thomann.de/nl/beyerdynamic_ohrmuschelsatz.htm?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkb6vkuvphAMVo5JoCR0ACAd-EAQYASABEgKayPD_BwE#bewertung

Those aren’t compatible with DT-990 according to specs, but might still fit fine.
I didn’t experience the discomfort/heat with the stocks pads when I used them daily years ago. So not sure why I do now…

Test results of battery energy consumption between 47ohm vs 250ohm at +/-70dB A on iPad pro M1.

    Test has been done with:

    • Audio Technica ATH M30X 47ohm Sensitivity 96dB
    • Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250ohm Sensitivity 96dB

I took one of my own tracks for reference as this one is fairly linear

and put it on a loop in Wavebox.
I measured the inside of the earpad with a hardware Decibel meter at +/-70 dB A for one hour at a 100% fully charged iPad pro M1 for both attempts.

    Results:

Audio Technica M30X drained in one hour 5% energy (loudness level of the iPad was set around +/-60% to achieve at +/-70 dB A)

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250ohm drained in one hour 4% energy (loudness level of the iPad was set around +/-80% to achieve at +/-70 dB A).

    Conclusion:

Ok, this is not a laboratory test, but set up as good as possible with the tools I have at hand.
Roughly said, both headphones drain as much energy! Very surprising results as I would have expected the 250ohm DT770 would need more battery for the volume to drive, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Thanks for the tests! Also nice info about the DT770 Pro X, didn't know about these before and I'm looking forward to trying them.

Here's a quick Dub rack session where all the sound design decisions were made using the Sennheiser IE100 Pro inears only: https://streamable.com/yxqw0y

Thanks. It's my first dub techno attempt tbh, used to be more into Deep House where the rack still comes in handy. When it's finished I may upload it to Patchstorage or another site. I've recorded it today to show someone asking about what software to get for dub techno and Drambo is kinda ideal imo.

Dub Techno has a special place in my heart, the first time I heard it was at a record store in Amsterdam in the 90ties. Basic Channel and Maurizo (which appeared the same producers, but not much was known about them). They started the whole thing. You can wake me up for it.

Nice, Basic Channel, Maurizio and the Dubplates& Mastering gang ring a bell of course. I always liked it as background music, only recently got a bit more into it and artists like Deep Chord.

The first time I've heard it must have been in the Space Night TV program here in Germany which I've often watched back in the days. (they had all kinds of chill out and ambient electronic music in that program)

I like to watch sessions from Martin Stürtzer on YT and could grab one or the other advice from his synth tutorial videos so far:

VR with Apple vision could be really cool for live performances because it's potentially more attractive for viewers than just following somone on a single screen.
