Lumbeat iBassist manual?

Anyone know of one?

Or are there some good tutorials (seen the one from Sound test room) that FULLY explain how to control it properly and interact with the Lumbeat drum apps?

I've tried but cannot seem to get how to set it all up and then recall it all, probably via AUM.

  • There's a previous thread on this with the same basic question:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/45698/is-there-an-owner-s-manual-for-lumbeats-apps-jazz-drummer

It mentions this link, which is the one I found most helpful:

    https://rockdrummachine.com/index.html

You can also search YouTube for Lumbeat drummer - there's some very nice tutorials from Jade Starr at HowToApp and Doug at The Sound Test Room which cover a lot of the features and settings. I'm planning to do a couple videos on the Lumbeat drummer apps soon - I have several of them, and I really like them, but they'll be short ones that will highlight just a couple of the best features.

thanks will check them out, as I wrote already seen the STR one, which I sorta got, but didn't, haha!

Yep all of that I had seen, but NONE explain the interaction between iBassist and Lumbeat drum apps, which was really the whole point of the OP ;)

My bad - I can't read today. sigh I have iBassist and I've experimented with the interaction between them, and I haven't quite figured it out either. I do know that it seems to rely on Ableton link to work. If I can find anything posted about them working together, I'll post it here, and I'm going to put it on my list to create a vid if someone hasn't beat me to it, although I realize that doesn't help you right now ...

I think it's probably true that none of them are directed at explaining the interaction between iBassist and the Lumbeat drump apps. My recollection, though, is that a lot of them are videos that show iBassist working together with another Lumbeat app, and you can pick up what you need by closely watching what's done on the video, even though video is not dedicated to explaining it. I'm not saying that's a great solution, but with no manual you take what you can get.

Possibly, sorta kinda :) But with no time to go "trial and erroring" to figure it I've not too many options. I read manuals in downtime, or in between work shifts.

iBassist creates great basslines, but the interface isn’t ideal for quickly building lines from specific chord progressions. It feels a bit laggy, and I find it frustrating that the chord dialog disappears after just a couple of seconds (see screenshot).

I was hoping there’d be a way to "record" a chord progression into iBassist—either via an external MIDI keyboard or maybe through Loopy Pro—but I haven’t found a way. I've searched YouTube with no luck.

Does anyone know if this is possible, or can recommend another app (or hardware) that can do this?

    Cheers! 🙏

    That drives me nuts too.

I don't know of a way to record chords into the app's chord sequencer. One method that some have made work with limited success is to forget the chord sequencer and to send chords from something else live instead.

The catch with this approach is you have to send the chords a little bit before you want them to change. iBassist needs some time to detect the chord and to change the bass line. So, you would need to place your chords into a sequencer something like a 1/16 note before the changes.

JustChords is a really useful app that happens to have a setting to send chords early. @danm put more effort into trying this than just my brief testing. It seemed to work well enough, but he also wanted to send the chords to other apps at the same time, and not have them play early, so I'm not sure he ever got it to work as they needed. But, just for driving iBassist, it seemed to work fine for me.

Of course, it would be better to have those chords in iBassist's sequence as they should be so that midi export could work.

  • I’ve thought about starting a community driven Lumbeat “guide”. Don’t know what that would look like, but I’ve been collecting little bits of info from threads and videos to make notes on areas the manuals are lacking.

The old "Audiobus" wiki (subsection of the Loopy Pro wiki) is one good place for such pages: https://abwiki.loopypro.com/

(Note to @espiegel123 - perhaps the link title on the Loopy Pro Wiki sidebar should be updated to remove reference to Audiobus. Probably the start page title as well.)

    Good idea!

Thanks! I appreciate you pointing out the chord detection — I did figure out how to send MIDI from another source, but as you mentioned, iBassist's chord detection seems laggy as usually on the downbeat of the start of the loop, it will play a note from the previous chord, which is super frustrating and defeats the purpose of having bass at all....

It’s a shame iBassist has this issue. Despite its quirks, it really seems to be in a league of its own on iOS. When it works, it’s a fantastic tool.

I just tried out JustChords. It looks more like a chords-and-lyrics scrolling app—I couldn't find a way to record MIDI into it. How do you use it, when you use it?

I'm still trying to figure out how generate quality basslines on-the-fly. There must be a way... getting closer, but not quite there yet.

Maybe @LuisMartinez could shed some light on the lag issues?

If iBassist doesn’t pan out, I might look into the Trio pedal or other hardware options. If anyone has suggestions, I’m all ears. Cheers!

  • have you looked at the Xmure app?

It doesn't record. You set up the chords in advance. So, that's not what you're after. I only mentioned it because it has a setting to send the chords before the beat. That'd be ok for accompaniment but not for live composition.

It seems understandable to me. In order to work, the app has to have seen the notes coming in, then decide on a chord, then finally transpose the pattern. It can't see the chord until it arrives. It arrives on the beat, so the opportunity to change the bass line has already passed for that note.

  • This isn't a solution, but just a bit of brainstorming.

In Loopy Pro (beta test or the upcoming 2.0), you can record midi to a loop, then shift the playback of the loop so that it triggers early. It should be possible to capture a chord progression on the fly, then have it automatically shift the loop position and play it back to iBassist.

It wouldn't be exactly live. You'd have to play the chord progression one time through "solo", then send it to iBassist.

Wouldn't take long to build up a few songs that way...once recorded you have them always.
