Connecting an iPad to control an Apple laptop

Hey fellow musicians..

I have an iPad for music making, but don’t have an Apple laptop -- and I am not experienced with Apple devices.

Three questions:

  1. If I had an M1 (or something similar), would I be able to make my music on the iPad (eg. on Drambo), and have that sync Kontakt or other libraries that are running on the Apple laptop?

  2. How would the MIDI/sequencing connection be set up, to control the laptop's software? (Would it be running standalone there? Could multiple pieces of software run there, and I'd be controlling them via various MIDI channels?)

  3. How would I record the laptop's audio into the iPad?

Thank you, and have a great Sunday!

  • Hi. Look up IDAM for MacOS. You make a direct connection from the iPad Lightning or USB-C port to a USB port on the Mac. It allows two-way MIDI communication, and one-way iPad to Mac audio. That's a good starting point. (You can connect through a hub on the Mac side, but the iPad connection must be direct to the iPad port. This lets the iPad act as a USB slave to the Mac host.)

  • Awesome, thank you!

As @uncledave mentioned, iDAM is an easy solution for most of what you want to do. The only point iDAM doesn't address is #3. Audio is only one way - iPad to Mac. So recording would need to happen on the Mac. AirDrop is a fast way to transfer files between devices though. There's also iCloud. Drop files there and they will become available to both devices. You can also share a Mac folder and access it from the files app on the iPad.

If you need real-time two way audio, there are a few audio interfaces from iConnectivity Audio and Lewitt that can manage that. There's also a new desktop app called SideRack that looks very interesting.

  • Thank you! I'll dig into these..
