One plugin controls the other plugin in AUM with the midi controller Esi Xjam

I would like to use the midi controller from Esi, "Xjam", to play the plugin from UVI, "Beathawk". However, I would like to play sounds from the Korg Gadget 3 plug-in, "Gladstone", for example, via midi with Beathawk and Xjam. How should this be configured in AUM? Is that possible?

  • Hi. I'm not sure what the problem is. In AUM, you load each instrument (Beathawk, Gladstone) into different audio lanes. Your controller, and any app that sends MIDI (Beathawk), will appear in the MIDI routing matrix ("snake" icon in the upper right). You can connect them as you wish. You could try this, and post screenshots when you have a problem.

  • Hmmm - I'm getting a bit of a bot vibe with this one...

bots generally don't make up user names that specific. And, the question does actually make sense in context although the meaning isn't exactly clear. Gladstone and Beathawk are both drum related apps. It sounds as though the question is about substituting Beathawk drum sounds with Gladstone by sending midi out from it to the Gladstone plugin.

What isn't clear is if they really need midi out from Beathawk or if they've just overlooked that they could simply route the controller directly to the Gladstone plugin. They could want to use the Beathawk sequencer though.

Hmm, maybe - but a brand new account, one visit and no follow up? Perhaps I'm getting paranoid in my old age...😉

No, I am not a bot. Unfortunately, I don't have the insight, but I try to create a good setting for myself.
I have Korg Gadget 3, AUM, Beathawk and other single sounds like Hammond B-3x and Geoshred. I would like to make livelooping possible with these plugins, the connected Xjam and a keyboard controller. I like Beathawk very much, but I can't open other plugins in it. Wim is right, with the Gladstone plugin I would like to play the drums via an app like Beathawk.
I can open all plugins in AUM, but uncomplicated live looping doesn't seem to be possible. For example, I can't open Korg Gadget 3 in AUM, only the individual Gadget plugins.
Do I have to buy Cubasis, for example?

  • For uncomplicated live looping, you might look at Loopy Pro. It is really oriented to catching samples and replaying them.

I doubt that Cubasis would satisfy you. It's really meant for building up a track for recording, not for live performance.

Trying to clarify a bit the iOS music environment: the main feature is that a host app (AUM, Loopy Pro, Cubasis, Drambo) can load and interconnect AUv3 plug-ins. A plug-in cannot simultaneously be a host, so for example, Drambo loaded in AUM cannot load other plug-ins. This AUv3 system has two advantages: you can load multiple instances of an AUv3, and the state of the plug-ins can be saved in a host session.

Beathawk can send midi out, so you can use it's sequencer to play other apps such as Gladstone. I'll see if I can put together some steps for you to set it up.

Well, you can send Gadget's output to AUM by adding Gadget as an Inter-App Audio plugin. However, only the master output will come to AUM. You can't separate out the different Gadgets.

Loopy Pro is a great suggestion for live looping of audio, but I get the sense that we don't understand exactly what you mean by when you say "live looping". If you like Beathawk, I have the sense that audio looping isn't exactly what you're after.

Cubasis doesn't seem like a good fit for "live looping". It's a linear timeline based DAW, more suited to putting together structured songs.

BTW, I like the looks of the Xjam. That seems like a really useful pads controller.

  • Yes, the Xjam is great, aluminum housing and good pads. It was immediately recognized by the iPad and I was able to play Gladstone without midimapping.
Loopy Pro is an amazing tool, but I'm overwhelmed by all the possibilities.
I've now tested it by adding Gadget as an inter-app plugin and then adding individual AUv3 plugins. Maybe I'll buy the Sydney plugin. Many thanks for all the tips!

Do you still need the Beathawk sequencer to work with Gladstone, or are you going with Gadget?

  • Thank you, I also open Beathawk in AUM and play it like Gladstone with the Xjam, so it won't be necessary to control Gladstone via Beathawk. Thanks a lot though!
