Is it safe? (iOS8)

Hello. I've read some posts in some of the other threads but I wanted to get some general advice from people who have made the upgrade to iOS8.

If you could take a look at my setup. Here's what I got:

iPad 3

DAWs: Cubasis and Gadget

Korg: Gorillaz, Electro Tribe, iMS-20, PolySix, iKosolator

Drums: iMC pro, Drum Jam, DM1

Synths: Magellian, Ocilab, ReBirth, Thor, Rebirth, Orphion,Gallieo Organ, Animoog, iSem

Samplers: SampleTank, Samplr

Effects: Moog Filtration, Carmel, Echo Paf, Stereo Designer, Swoopster, AUFX:(Dub, Space, and Peak), Tone Stack, AmpliTube
Guitarism

Thanks.

  • The short answer would probably be no. You can check your list of apps here;

    http://audiob.us/ios8/

Several of them are covered, but wouldn't speak to the Korg apps. ToneStack works great. I mostly use Auria, ToneStack, Drumjam, Thumbjam, and a few other interchangeable synths. For me it hasn't been that bad from a creative point of view, but it's a pretty harsh realization when it hits you that you just "upgraded" a ton of the music apps you paid for right off your device.

My advice, until you have a killer feature in iOS8 that you can't live without, just wait.

  • I upgraded. I found out upgrading is a good way to deprive myself of apps I got comfortable using (Sampletank, IPolysix, Master FX, etc). It's forcing to use Bsi-16 more and NTBYF synth for various instruments. That's fine, but I'd gotten used to the high quality sounds from Master Fx and can't get the same quality elsewhere. The curses of being spoiled and subjective!

  • No, the blessings of being occasionally constrained, Vicar...(no, I haven't upgraded yet :)

Well that's good to know. Thanks guys.

I know AudioBus hasn't been updated yet, and I don't know what the word is on Gadget and Cubasis.

Another thing to consider is IAA. And I forgot about audio paste and Audio Share.

Audiobus has most definitely been updated. The problem is the many apps that require a new updated bit of Audiobus code before they will work in iOS 8. That's how I understand it.

  • http://audiob.us/ios8/ tells us what works with AudioBus but doesn't tell us what is generally working on iOS 8. Some apps should work on iOS 8 even if they haven't updated to the latest AB, right?

Does anyone know if iOS 8 breaks SampleTank (besides breaking its ability to use AB?)

  • Gadget for ios8 is in the works ... Myself - not planning on updating for at least another 3-4 months - things working very well on 7.

  • Again, there are a few issues...iOS8, apps working on iOS8, and/or compatible with lower revisions, the latest AB SDK, and the degree that each is implented (not to even start on midi sync.) I think the AB SDK has been proven beyond the others, but the rest is enough to wreak havoc. Add to that, maintaining iOS7 compatibility, and I can appreciate where we're at.

No answers here, but I have an iMini Retina on iOS8 (with all apps updated), and an iPad4 on iOS7 (no audio apps updated.). I'm not having significant issues on either, but that doesn't help unless we compare specific configs. Still more art than science, it seems.

  • Not only apps: There are also issues with some class-compliant USB/MIDI devices since iOS8.

    Definitely not safe dude! ;)

    Not at all safe.

I was going to quote that but wasn't sure how. Well done!

  • Well that's good to know. I wonder how long it will be before developers catch up.

It sounds like the issue is not just developers but that ios8 itself is also causing some issues. I'm in no rush to have it. My daughter's 4s is running it and it looks and feels just like 7, aside from being able to use a 3rd party keyboard for some things.

iOS 6 to iOS 7 was a major change in the user experience (in a positive way), especially things like the swipe up control panel for wifi, bluetooth, etc, and the way to shut down apps. But ios8 looks and feels more like a subtle refinement, so no rush to get to it yet for me. I will, but not just yet.

  • I'm just glad i updated before buying apps but wish i could roll back. insert facepalm
