iPadOS17.4 – you may want to wait a bit
Since installing 17.4 yesterday afternoon, I've logged 65 ExcUserFault errors. They mostly affect 3rd-party apps, but also some obscure system components. They don't seem to affect my usage, but this is definitely not "normal". So I'd recommend waiting for another update which might offer a fix.

Nothing like that here. Was pretty smooth for me since I updated (2 days ago I think?).
Maybe it’s something specific to your iPad that will hopefully be fixed with the next update.
But ... those new emojis! I'm not sure I can hold off much longer!
No issues here either, weird.
My iPad has locked up completely a few times since updating. I’ve had to force a restart to get it responding again
As @wim has mentioned, the new Emojis are probably taking up all available RAM and thus the iPad is running out of memory 😂
So weird, i tried a new toneX amp and one of these new emoji’s popped up out if no where . lol
On a more serious note, so far all good here.
Just a suggestion for those feeling all good. Take a look at your "Analytics Data" in Settings. As I said, these ExcUserFaults don't seem to affect operation, but they're definitely not right.
Thanks for the heads-up! I usually wait to update too. I really hope it doesn’t mess up ToneX cause i have to play this weekend! Next time I’m definitely going to wait. Thanks
I see some for each of the past few days, but wouldn’t have known they were there if I hadn’t looked.
Nope, "touch wood" nothing here either...iPad Pro 3rd gen.
dang it... LOL
wish i had seen this post earlier
just done an update a couple of hours ago
pad air 3
i will keep an eye out for any issues thanks for the headsup
No major errors in my old iPad Pro so far. But then again, the latest update still doesn't get me past iPadOS 17... Your mileage may vary.
Does anyone actually know what a ‘ ExcUserFault’ error actually is?
I Googled it but there is very little information other than people saying they have seen them, but nothing in the way of actual impacts.
Exception type error. Found this, but nothing about your specific exception error. Some older reports connect your type of error to malware or malicious hacking from rogue apps or web sites. Maybe change your browser to something secure like the Brave browser? And don’t use any unknown third party software?

Has anyone actually seen it anywhere other than in analytics data? Are we turning a non-issue into something bigger than it is?
It keeps locking up my iPad. Had no problems before this update.
What is going on before it locks up? Are you using a specific app or built-in function?
Just browsing the web or reading books. It locks up when I start scrolling.
Two of my iPads now need several seconds to wake up.
Also, VPN connections are broken after waking up. They switch between connected/disconnected until i manually stop and restart them. Therefore no internet connection after waking up the iPad. The settings app also freezes for some time.
I remember that those problems existed before long ago, also after an update.
Both are A-Processor iPads. My M2 iPad seems not to be affected.
I've noticed CPU spikes in AUM projects that worked ok before. Now, I didn't know an update was coming. I have turned off automatic updates. I think it's time to freeze my old iPad 6th gen.
The logs show "GUARD_TYPE_USER". These guards are apparently used to trap accesses to a file descriptor after the connected port (or web socket) has been closed. From the apparently similar content in the logs, I suspect that some specific system component may be the culprit; possibly an object destructor closing a file that's already been closed. I haven't noticed any operational effect caused by these events, so it's not a big deal. I just suggest that others might want to pass on this update, unless they need those emojis...
@HarlekinX . It sounds like your problem may be different, and clearly more damaging. For reference, I'm on iPad 6 with A10 processor, iPadOS 17.4.
Updated an iPhone 11pro, iPad mini 5, and iPad Pro m2 to 17.4 on release. I have not noticed any issues or problems at all.
Smooth update on all devices for me.
No problems, but disappointment that the problem related to some multi-port MIDI devices like the Korg SQ-1 sequencer is still not fixed. While the iPad can receive MIDI messages from the sequencer, it is still not possible to send any kind of MIDI message to the sequencer. I'm glad that someone recently gave me a first gen. iPad Air running an iOS 12.x version. I now use it as second sequencer screen. And that old device works like a charm with MIDI.
I'm on the beta. Envy me! Actually, don't. Since installing 17.4 I've come down with some kind of bug.
I can confirm that IOS 17.4 messed up my mido bindings in AUM. I didn't realize it until i played this morning at church and my midi assignment were kaput!! I had to press twice to enable or disable an effect in AUM. I confimed it by loading up an older template I had saved as backup. Once I loaded it, the same thing happened.
No wonder i kept thinking i had disabled an effect Live only to realize it was still enabled as it took two presses of the pedal switch to disable it when before it was only one press.
I had to reprogram all my midi bindings but i had to enable invert and disable cycle. Also, i don't ever. Remember having to do that or even the cycle option in AUM being enabled.
That sounds awkward.
I believe AUM has always enabled Cycle by default for an ON/OFF AUv3 parameter. So you need to turn it off when using a controller that already sends a toggle. I wonder if something's changed in your controller, changing its output from momentary to toggle.
Same here, did you manage to find a fix? Most apps I use have frozen up or randomly quit while using them at some point since I updated.
Unfortunately, no. Still locking up randomly. Looking at the analytics, it seems to coincide with the ExcUserFaults that the OP mentions. Hopefully Apple release a fix for this soon. It’s a pain in the arse.
Interestingly I realized I hadn’t updated my older iPad, which has had some scrolling and locking up issues that you describe above. When I updated to 17.4 those issues went away…
