Free mini accordion sample pack (one-shots)

I decided to add accordions to my sonic arsenal. I am far from being a great accordion player, but I find it fun and useful to create soundscapes and sonic textures.

Last February, I was very lucky to find a vintage Excelsior Digisyzer accordion at an affordable price. It has a marvelous sound. I sometimes record while I am learning and taming it. The samples in this pack are extracted from one of these recordings.

This is a collection of a few one-shot samples and not an extensive multi-sampled pack. Not all the keys and buttons have been sampled. There are a few single notes but I mainly extracted bits that I find interesting from my sessions.

They include short sequences of notes or chord/notes combinations that sound good. Possible uses are: one-shot to spice up a piece, looped to create an ambient pulse or mood, thrown in a granular sampler or any other sample mangler.

This first offering of accordion samples is divided in 2 small packs.

Improvising on @phonolyth Shoom synthesizer (iOS).

The 3 speech samples are from the Memory Collection packs, sounds from public domain movies.

The first accordion sample (bass at 0:52) is from the above free mini sample pack 1:

The second accordion sample (drone at 1:15) is from my Patreon Reward pack 38.

  • More info about the sampled accordion:
The Digisyzer is a fantastic accordion:
Excelsior is a top accordion brand and this model is a high-end full acoustic accordion with an integrated control panel that connects to an external tone generator. The tone generator not only provides accompaniment but also tones that can be played from the accordion. The generator has 4 audio outputs. I’ve read it was made by Kawai.

It dates from the early 1980s and pre-MIDI, it uses a proprietary control interface system.
Note that the one I bought didn’t have its tone generator, so I could not test this feature. And the samples are fully acoustic and unprocessed except for some noise reduction.

In this video, I have imported a sample from the pack in Tardigrain granular synth to create a deep drone sound.

    These samples are nice!
Definitely something different and inspiring to play with.
This accordion must be a beast 😮

Good that you've pushed your thread, now is the first time that I see it!

Thanks rs2000, glad you find the samples inspiring!

It is indeed a beast, weighs 29 pounds!

  • You inspired me to haul out my accordion from the basement!

It's a middle sized Hohner that I bought decades ago for $25. I was given accordion lessons as a child but hated it; then later rediscovered it. I credit the accordion for ingraining the circle of fifths in my brain. (because of the bass keys) As a kid I often spent time just making drone sounds with it just like in your video.

Great, I love making drone sounds and slowly evolving textures with the accordion. I think it's a fantastic instruments for that!

I've read on the Accordionists Forum that an accordion needs to be played regularly to stay in good condition. Good thing you hauled it from the basement.

  • Spectral Audio Editing, example with a sample from my Patreon Reward sample pack #38

The spectral view showing the frequencies is the orange background and the standard amplitude view is the blue foreground. Lower frequencies are at bottom of the window and zones where specific frequencies have more amplitude are in brighter orange.

With traditional audio editing, when a time region is selected, any edit is applied to all frequencies. With spectral editing, specific frequencies can be edited, for instance cut or boosted, without affecting the other ones that are at the same time. But of course the overall level of the processed region will change accordingly.

Here, I am using iZotope RX Advanced audio editor but there are others too that have spectral editing capabilities.

The sample is an Excelsior accordion from my Patreon Reward sample pack #38.
