Macs and networks

I haven’t used a network since the 2000’s on windows and am not sure how to set this up.

So I have a macbook pro in my drum room and a mac mini at my desk. What’s the simplest way to access one from the other over wifi network?

  • Depends what you want to do. If it’s file transfer just use Airdrop. It’s possible to create file sharing on Macs too, but not sure if that’s what you want.

Airdrop is fine for me when it works, a lot of the time it doesn’t. File sharing is what I want.

  • iCloud Drive. Pretty easy to set up on both computers, you can access it from Finder, and you know you'll be accessing the latest version on either machine. Downside is that it aways stores local copies of what you put on the Drive on both machines too.

  • If you want fast file sharing over your local network, this might be more like what you want.
Note that the user(s) accessing the shared folders need to be known to both machines.

  • Yep. For solid connections I would recommend this way as well. The advantage of this over iCloud is that you stay on the local network so the file sharing is available even if your Internet has a connection hick up or two. Even in these great days of AI the Internet still seems to find a way to go down occasionally.

    Yep works great.

    Thanks all. 👍

  • You can also use file sharing without using shared folders — you can log into the networked Mac through the finder and have access to the full drive.

Enable file sharing in settings to do this. Then select the networked Mac from a finder window sidebar, log in with that other Mac’s main user and you’re good to go.
