Can I record tardigrain performance into a midi app?
Hi, I like to use various parameters within tardigrain to jam out a performance. I’d like to record all of these movements into an app like 4 pockets midi mixer or midi tape recorder. Does anyone know if it possible please?
I don’t just want to record the keyboard notes, I’m hoping to record the grain start/stop positions etc.
I’d like to then play back my recording into tardigrain so that I can use my hands to control various fx and make an audio recording of the results.
Thanks.

So you want to record the changes you make to the Tardigrain interface while playing? If yes, this is called automation and some daws do it automatically (if you turn on automation recording), like Cubasis. It's doable in other daws for sure (like AUM) but I don't have suggestions on how to do it because I'm not a user.
@unlink thank you. So long since I used Cubasis I didn’t even consider it. I will give that a whirl. Cheers.
Record the output of any midi performance (no edits) with the accuracy one would record sample accurate audio

@audiblevideo thanks, that’s what I tried first. I could only manage to get it to recognise notes played on the tardigrain keyboard, not any movement of grain start/stop etc.
I will have another mooch at his YouTube vids.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Does Tardigrain send MIDI controllers at all? It only reads them I think.
But it does expose AUv3 parameters so you can record knob movements in any DAW that supports it.
@rs2000 i think I’m gonna go for the cubasis option with automation. Mr Bevin of midi tape app replied and said It will record other midi messages too, as long as they're sent to it. A bit beyond my midi knowledge but I’d like to figure it out if I can as I’d like to do it all in AUM if at all possible. Thanks.
A good first step is to see if anything is sent out from Tardigrain when you move the controls. My guess is it isn't.
Streambyter, ShowMIDI, and MidiSpy are some good free midi monitoring tools.
If so then you're out of luck with AUM unless you use some other app to manipulate the Tardigrain AUv3 parameters if they're exposed. You could then route that app to Midi Tape Recorder with midi thru enabled. However, as midi is limited to 128 steps, you may notice the result isn't as smooth as when using the Tardigrain interface itself.
You need to consider if the app you want to record sends everything you play out over midi when playing from the app UI
Not many auv3 plugs send midi out for example. Auv3 devs seem to forget or not realize how usefull it is to have every on screen interaction also available as midi data.
My advice, even when you are recording midi. Also record audio.
The best performances with touch apps eventually will be your focus, the interaction and a audio recorder and no worries about anyhing else.
Even when you do get a proper midi recording setup, chances it will sound the same on playback are slim.
Tardgrain will send md notes and cc as standalone or iaa. As auv3 it will only send notes played.
Use AUM channel looper,
use loopy pro.
Just record audio.
Saves headaches and captures good jams you will lose otherwise.
@wim thanks for the info, it helps me gain a better understanding of what I’m actually asking to do. And how it might not give the results I’d hoped for. Cheers.
@tpj thanks for the advice. I should just put a note on my wall that says ‘just record audio’ as I get more done when I do. Exploring the possibilities of midi does sometimes use up my time and I don’t necessarily get anything down. Thanks.
I think that's the major secret of the OP-1 😊
