Anyone tried this new(ish) step sequencer?

Das Lauflicht - Core MIDI Step Sequencer for Serious Musicians by Codelle

Says its engineered for precision timing and works with all virtual midi devices. I could just burn the 4 bucks and try it, but since we are a forum it doesn't hurt to ask. I've tried a lot of these and not many stood the test. Right now I've had pretty good luck with Xynthesizer (which is not currently updated for 8/AB2) but it has some nice features. Always looking for a good little matrix seq.

Yes, I noticed it before, but did not buy. It's extremely similar to Koushion (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/koushion-midi-step-sequencer/id424454249?mt=8) in appearance, except cheaper and lacks even more functionality. I'm not even sure it works in the background, which would be a bit of a concern. It also lacks musical features referenced in that other thread, and does not have AB. In other words, it's like Koushion, but worse.

Finding a good MIDI step sequencer to power other synths or drum apps remains my "Ahab's whale" obsession. In many ways, Xynthesizer remains the most reliable option. The devloper of Analog midiSequencer is working on an app with piano roll editing and incorporating many of the same features. This is by far my most anticipated app.

Until then, I've tried others, but they all have slight issues or missing features. For example, I got MIDI Pattern Sequencer (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/midi-pattern-sequencer/id579508906?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4) since I really liked Audio Mastering by the same developer. But it's basically for monophonic phrases, since you have to program each note of a chord manually and on separate rows. Works though.

Genome is probably the one that most fits the bill, but it was a little more pricey and I heard some issues that suggested it was buggy. (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/genome-midi-sequencer/id450475494?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4) I may still try it out at some point, though Tony's new app is certainly the one I have highest hopes for.

  • Genome would be my ideal sequencer for the iPad if it had a damn metronome...I emailed their support weeks ago and never received a reply.

  • Perversely good to hear of others troubles in this area. I am still (in this department at least) a neophyte and thus have a tendency to believe if something isn't working it must surely be user error.

I also agree that to date Xynthesizer seems the most consistent/rewarding for me, but doesn't always play nice with others (I have a feeling it's the others rather than it).

/jg looks with vague menace at Thor who obviously doesn't give a shit about him

I would buy Genome out of morbid curiosity, but I didn't get the impression it was well supported. And that's a problem for a MIDI app that needs to adapt to changing iOS versions. But the interface looks like it should work like I want it to.

Out of curiosity, how do you use a metronome with a step sequencer? Are you playing live to record the notes, or are you simply "programming" them on the piano roll grid?

  • ^ @StormJH1 -- on a completely unrelated note, email me. seriously. worth! promise.

12 bit librarian (no spaces) AAAAAAAAAAAT gggggggggggmail DOOOT the rest

  • It's not just a step sequencer, you can record real-time either from inside the app or using external MIDI. It is a pain in the ass to use any non-step sequencer without a metronome, esp when there's no IAA/AB type sidebar.

  • What is going on with Genome? Seemed like he was just around the corner from releasing the new version with instruments a year ago. I haven't opened it since caving and buying BM2 but I'm interested to see what the new version pulls together.

And yeah, people have been asking him for a metronome since release. Think he started down that path and ended up making a big old pivot to sequencer+audio instruments. I wonder if it sorta got away from him.

  • Do you have Koushion @StormJH1? Hadn't seen that one before, looks pretty cool and the developers facebook mentioned more updates coming.

I also can't wait for the new app from Tony Saunders. I can't let myself get as excited for all the new synths anymore, too much money for territory I've got covered. New ways to play around with those synths though...

  • I've always found Koushion to be pretty reliable. The dev did tell me that he was thinking of adding AB in the future. He hadn't thought it was worthwhile previously.

That is extremely disheartening. I don't want all that bloat in a midi sequencer, and can't really follow the logic of the idea.

I really like Genome and it's current layout. I don't want anything changed, just a metronome hehe

I do not. Considering it though. It's pretty common that MIDI apps leave out AB initially because they usually don't generate their own sound. But, of course, they drive apps that do, and use of the mini controls is huge for starting patterns to record into a daw.

  • in the meantime you could step sequence your fav metronome sound and play to that maybe ?

  • i don't get any sequencer that doesn't have a metronome :(

  • I increasing use StepPolyArp as a light midi sequencer when I can't be bothered to create a project in Beat Maker 2.

SPA is actually really powerful. Polyphonic, can sequence and send various CCs as well as notes. You can create patterns and decide how long it loops and when to move to the next pattern etc. I'm sure you can send notes to different midi channels too. Has it's own keyboard with scales too. You just have to get used to the fact it works as a sequencer by latching a base note and then you trigger transposed notes relative to that base note. Once you get your head round that you're away.

It also seems to send midi nicely to any app I've ever tried it with.

  • how does StepPolyArp compare to midiSequencer, please?
    I'm new, please sorry

  • Hi. I don't have midiSequencer. Sorry.

  • midiSequencer is aimed at modifying individual notes in any pattern you want - you can even delay alterations to it, or lay the notes out as an arpeggio if you wish, but the emphasis is on noodling melodic lines much like you would on a moog or doepfer hardware sequencer.
StepPolyArp is an arpeggiator, so focuses on playing chords one note at a time, over many octaves in patterns. As such, it allows you to setup the intervals easily.

  • @Goozoon, there are many great apps out there. I really like yuri's xynthesizr (also has some great internal sounds) and StepPolyArp (for it's arpeggios).
