Controlling synth parameters in AUM using Gatelab?

I downloaded Gatelab because I was under the impression that it could be a quick and fun way to add two lanes of automation to any of my synth plugins in AUM since the app store description says “It can also send midi data, giving it the ability to control or randomize parameters in other plugins.” However, I can only load it as an effect in AUM, so I’m not sure how this works out. Any help would be appreciated.

Comments

  • Okay I got Panflow to do the job (only one lane of automation though) by connecting it to the midi control in AUM, but I don’t seem to get this option with Gatelab.

  • Hi. When you load Gatelab in AUM, does it appear as a MIDI source in the routing matrix ("snake" icon in the upper right of AUM)? If it does, you can route that MIDI in two ways:

    1. Send it direct to another app. This works if the app has pre-defined MIDI mapping, or you can MIDI-learn a mapping.

    2. Send it to MIDI Control in AUM. Then you can use it to control any AUv3 parameter (sliders icon in the plug-in title bar), or any of the AUM controls themselves. This is likely the most flexible solution.

If Gatelab does not appear in the routing matrix, you won't be able to route its midi. You may need to contact the Gatelab dev.

Yes. I downloaded Gatelab to check it out. It looks like the claim of MIDI out is fictional, at least in iOS. I suspect it does not identify itself correctly, so the hosts don't know that it can output MIDI. You might try contacting the dev.

Remember you can load mode instances of Panflow to drive additional parameters.

Something like LK or Rozeta might meet your needs better.

Thanks, I suspected as much. It’s weird since Gatelab and Panflow are from the same guy, and they got the latter to work with AUM just fine. Anyways, I found Flux Mini 2 as a similar lightweight solution. I’m not sure if you’ve seen Panflow, but it’s kinda painful to look at with its unchangeable purple theme.

I just stumbled over this as well. Must be a Gatelab bug.

Update: Got a quick response from Audiomodern and indeed the Appstore description is misleading.
Sending MIDI would require a MIDI fx component of the plugin which does not yet exist.
They're working on a Gatelab V2 which is supposed to include one though!

I’d really look forward to that. Aside from being a really simple and intuitive gate sequencer, I was intrigued by this app as a midi cc sequencer due to the following:
1.) two lanes of automation in one instance of what seems to be a cpu-friendly plugin
2.) step automation has a distinct character due to the lack of smooth curves
3.) the mode that only allows for each step to be on (100%) or off (0%) would be really useful for certain synth parameters

Anyone know of some lightweight auv3 plugins that focus on this thing (i.e. step automation) that aren’t part of much bigger plugins that would be a cpu hog in AUM?

Drambo is very lightweight if you only use a simple patch like this:

And it runs in sync with your host, at adjustable speeds etc.

You can chain as many of them as you want and mix the MIDI streams with the MIDI Mixer module. On/Off is possible too by reducing the grid size and enabling snapping in the sequencer editor.

Curve smoothing could be done too by filtering or by using a Graphic Envelope...
