Meow Audio Editor for macOS! Public Beta (M1/M2/Apple Silicon)

Hey audio editing folks,

Meow is now in public testing for macOS on Apple Silicon Macs!

https://testflight.apple.com/join/cOPaXZDU

Thanks a lot in advance for your interest and feedback!

Here's a few things you might watch out for while giving the app a spin on your Mac:

  • "Open" / Drag & Drop: Does loading MP3 / M4A / AAC files work?
  • Does the mouse (drag-select on the waveform, scrolling with the scroll wheel) work properly?
  • Does the trackpad (particularly scrolling, but also possibly zooming with two fingers) work?
  • Do keyboard shortcuts always work reliably?
  • Does playback always work?
  • Does resampling always work at all offered sample rates?
  • Does recording in the "Rec" dropdown work? Do audio interfaces appear in the list? Does stereo recording work and are the recorded channels actually different from each other?
  • Do both Dark and Light modes work? (System Settings "Appearance")
  • When you quit or background the app window and then come back / restart, is the last session properly restored?

Thank you!

  • I'm guessing this will only ever be for Silicon Macs?

Intel is not out of the question, but the first attempt using an Apple technology called "Catalyst" for bringing iOS apps to all Macs "quickly" turned out to be too limiting, so I've postponed this (but maybe not indefinitely! ☺)

    Cool - thanks, no pressure...!

  • @SevenSystems do you plan on the macOS desktop being a separate purchase? Or, completely universal & included in the current mobile IAP purchase?

ps. that welcome text on the desktop beta is a bit too small for a desktop display. Actually, all of the text seems too small for desktop. Maybe a different typeface that reads easier when small?

Thanks for the report -- could you attach a screenshot of the app's window maybe?

  • Hey, thanks a bunch. Yes that's indeed a bit small. I'm not sure if there's an option when running an iOS app on Mac to change the Text Size? On iOS itself, when you go to the system "Settings" app, you can change the "Text Size" for each individual app, and many (including Meow) will use this. But I'm not sure if that setting is available somewhere when running an iOS app on Mac.

Maybe in the "View" menu? 🤔

Also noticed that there's a gap in the top toolbar where the iOS status bar would normally go... macOS tells Meow that this space is "reserved", but it seems unnecessary on Mac as there is no status bar? Strange... do other iOS apps also have a gap at the top?

  • @SevenSystems I see there’s an auto-crossfade setting. Is there a way to set Meow to automatically add a cross-fade between each subsequent recording made within the app?

Hey... no, this is currently not possible, but it's an interesting idea indeed! MInd if I put that on the roadmap :)

Wavebox can do this. It’s cool for making live edit walkabout environment recordings. I’ve made some recordings like this capturing walking through Mexican markets. It’s a handy feature for sure, but a little clunky in Wavebox.

I saw you have “auto-crossfade” already and wondered if I could utilize for walkabout field recordings.

Can’t say if anyone else would find it useful in Meow 😻 but I know I would. :)

Hi, wondering how the universal native macOS update is coming? I’m not on the beta and was curious about its progress

Hey... it's basically done, however there's a huge amount of burocracy to go through for publishing with uncertain outcome, I have to find the resolve to tackle this in the coming days! Sorry for the delay...

(it doesn't help that with the current sales figures, Meow would need several years to even recoup the development cost so far...)

Well, I did my part to help with your sales figures :) Hopefully 🤞 those, like myself, will see extra value in iOS apps that can ALSO be universally and natively used on macOS. :)

Absolutely, no doubt -- I appreciate each and every customer. I love music app development and I'd never do anything else if it were more profitable! Thank you for your support.

    Didn't notice this.

    Any answers still open?
    I could install tonight ...

Hey -- sorry, this thread is about the old ("Designed for iPad") version. The new version will be a native Mac app. Thanks though!
