One RingsFX to rule them all… Cyclopean Halls
“…a Cyclopean city of no architecture known to man…vast aggregations of night-black masonry embodying monstrous perversions of geometrical laws…” H.P. Lovecraft, At The Mountains Of Madness.
So, several iterations of RingsFX, aided and abetted with some mutilated examples of @Krupa’s Krunchy valve noises gave me… this little thing.
As ever, all bouquets or brickbats eagerly sought.

Nice. Tim Heckler vibes
If that movie ever gets made I’m nominating you for the soundtrack!
Eee lovely, proper sent my stuff to the netherworld and summoned it back covered in ectoplasm and gore 🤘
Thanks all for the listens, and your kind words.
Yes, Tim Hecker. He’s been mentioned to me a couple of times now and on checking him out, I can kind of see what people are getting at.
Ah, the movie! Guillermo Del Toro, right? That would have been something to see. The recent Nick Cage Colour Out Of Space proves that it is actually possible to do Lovecraft fully right on screen, but I guess the niche nature of the fandom and maybe even old H.P.s eminently cancellable rep make a big money punt on something which would also need location shooting a la Thing a bit of a stretch. Still, we can hope…
@Krupa : Ha! Glad you liked it. There’s a lot of goodness to be dug out of your pack. Like the Metropolis one, I can see myself returning to it plenty in future…
Fantastic sound design!
Yes Del Torro, but he walked away from it. Rumor has it that he walked when the studio insisted that Tom Cruise be given a starring role… Surprising it got so far, but in the end it was down to studios worrying about making money from it.
Love this abyssal plain scale!
Immense space filled with unseen beings
Lurking
Prying
Preying
Very nice! It reminds me of Barry Gray’s end theme to Gerry Anderson’s 1970s British TV series “UFO”, a futuristic look towards 1980. It was “essential” viewing for this impressionable adolescent of the time🤭. This link has both the intro theme, and the end theme (at 12:38); also other “snippet nuggets” for those not familiar with the show. Happy times!
I watched all of them again a few years back. Most of what I watched as a kid is disappointing to see again as an adult, but this was great to watch again. I think as an adult you realize more how dark some of this show was.
Oh, I consider that the highest compliment! I was an eight year old fan of that show, had my own Shado 2 mobile (Dinky version), and was a big fan of all Barry Gray’s themes. I think the one he did for the spy/child abuse mashup Joe 90 was his weirdest/finest:
Seriously: what was Joe’s dad thinking? Maybe he just didn’t like him?
😂😂😂😂
I also like being reminded of the “high-tech” golf ball printer in the intro, which was still in use when I started work as a computer programmer in the early 1980s. I agree about it seeming darker now. I was a fan Anderson’s creations, growing up with Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Capt. Scarlet, Joe 90 etc. They all got progressively darker but I agree, we didn’t notice it at the time. I don’t think UFO would look the same if made now with today’s values, and I’m not sure Joe 90 would even get made, given that it involves repeated brainwashing of a minor! It all seemed good clean fun to a child at the time though. With hindsight the “darkness” of UFO seems pretty consistent with how things are turning out in “Century 21”.
Sorry for distracting from Svetlovska’s excellent piece.
Great minds think alike! I’ve just seen your response after writing my previous post. I had the toy vehicles from all of those shows (apart from UFO, when I was just “growing out” of toys). The Corgi FAB1, and SPV, MSV & SPC from Capt. Scarlet were my favourite toys.
Incidentally, as a former radio ham, I’ve always thought that the Capt. Scarlet Spectrum drum roll “di dum, dum, di di di dum”
spells out ATV (Associated Television) in Morse Code. The distribution company ITC was a subsidiary company of Lew Grade’s ATV. Of course, if you hear “DUM DUM, dum, di di di dum” then that spells MTV instead, which predates the music channel! I’ve never seen this suggested anywhere else, so I’m probably barking up the wrong tree! It’s also worth remembering that Anderson’s productions were fond of 3-letter acronyms (F.A.B. , S.I.G. etc. 😉).
I thought it must be Lovecraftian hyperbole, but here's from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclopean_masonry: Cyclopean masonry is a type of stonework found in Mycenaean architecture, built with massive limestone boulders, roughly fitted together with minimal clearance between adjacent stones.
speaking of childhood movie influences.
…and the fighting skeletons! Ray Harryhausen was a legend
Ah, great childhood memories of going to see some of the films he was involved with on Saturday mornings when it was half price admission.
A couple of years back there was an amazing exhibition of loads of his models and other bits in Edinburgh, I got the impression it was travelling around the world so good to catch it if I’d ever passes near you…
I would definitely go see it if I can. I’ll check online and see what I can find out.

That was it…
I saw that, and also that they are possibly going to display it in other locations from 2024 onwards.
🎉
Mention UFO and I immediately think of purple hair and silver outfits…
Beautiful track btw 🙏
